Technical Intern

May - August 2023 • Scott Depot, WV

What I liked

The experience was great as a whole. Working in an environment as professional as I did was new to me and took some getting use to, but as the term is closing it is something that I became accustomed to. The people I worked with and interacted with everyday made me feel welcomed as an intern through them understanding that I never done many of the tasks I was given. Another thing I appreciated was the fact that I was treated as another employee, in the sense that they trusted my work and held me accountable. During this work term, I was also able to go into the field and experience more than just the office work of a civil engineer.

What I wish was different

Throughout the work term, there were networking events that allowed interns to interact and connect with people within the company. I wish I had taken advantage of the networking and attended more of the optional calls and events. To add to connecting to others, I think that in the future I will ask more questions when I am not 100% sure what the meaning behind a task is. There were times when I completed assignments but I wasn't sure why I needed to do them, and that is something that will later hinder my progress.

Advice

The one thing that I would encourage is to always learn from others around you. Everyone has some form of information to offer regardless of how many years of experience they have. Through this experience, I have learned from previous interns as well as employees who have been apart of the company for 20+ years and all of them had something that I was able to take with myself moving forward. The biggest piece of advice is to always be searching for new information as you can never have enough.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Liverpool, NY

What I liked

learning what real world engineering is. being paid to learn was really nice.

What I wish was different

I wish the actual job that I was doing was more interesting. When I accepted the internship I didn't know what to expect. I created CAD drawings all summer for power equipment and I didn't find it that interesting.

Advice

Although I didn't like the job it was invaluable experience because knowing that you don't want to do something is great. Treat internships as a test drive. The employer is going to see what you know and how you work. While at the same time you will see what the job has to offer and if the company and job is a good fit for you.

Integrity Intern

June - August 2019 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I liked how it was in a different state than what I currently live in. This made me branch out and do things out of my comfort zone that I probably wouldn't have done if I was still in Grand Rapids. The connections I made there were very helpful in deciding what I want to do in the future. I learned so many new things while working there and some things that weren't even related to my major. I was able to sit in at bid meetings with engineers and proposal coordinators and was encouraged to speak up and be involved in the proposal and bidding processes. I think this makes me more well rounded and able to adapt to different positions and environments in the workplace.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything had been different, it was a great experience.

Advice

I'd say to get out there and step out of your comfort zone. Move away, even if its for a couple of months. The people you meet and the experiences you have are unforgettable. You'll learn a lot and make connections with people that could really help you out once you're ready to get your career started!
