What I wish was different

I wish I had done an internship in my major but I enjoyed being the museum intern and made many connections.

Advice

Be prepared to network, to move to an unfamiliar area and to always go above and beyond on any assignment given to you.

What I liked

I liked the location and how helpful the employees were. I assisted employees with tasks that were going to be carried out to completion.

Nuclear Design Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Seabrook, NH

What I liked

I loved the location and company on both a large and small scale. The employees where I worked were extremely friendly and open to giving me suggestions for places to travel during my summer in the northeast.

What I wish was different

It's pretty difficult to find housing opportunities for a couple of months and the available housing can be pretty pricey. I definitely recommend looking into areas with universities nearby to sublease from students also traveling for the summer.

Advice

It's really easy to be intimidated by others and scared to ask for help when you're an intern. What I've seen is that people LOVE to help interns, so don't be afraid to ask questions -they expect you to. If you're not asking questions, you definitely could be pushing yourself more.

IT Intern

May - August 2018 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I liked the environment and culture, as well as the projects I was involved with. I learned and grew professionally a lot.

What I wish was different

The location money was reduced by taxes, and that should be taken into account. (Miami is expensive)

Advice

Be willing to be out of your comfort zone and open-minded to different challenges and projects.

Systems Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Homestead, FL

What I liked

The schedule flexibility (every other Friday off) and the project based work.

What I wish was different

The work could have been more relevant to my specific major rather than overall engineering.

Advice

Be one of the first one hundred people to apply to any job/internship. Your chances of them even looking at you greatly diminish otherwise.

Service Planning Distribution Intern

May - August 2017 • Port Orange, FL

What I liked

Great company and employees, really invests in the well being of the life-career balance of each member of NextEra/FPL, and easy to get behind a company that is the largest producer of clean energy in the world

What I wish was different

I wish I had been on the Energy Generation side rather than the Energy Distribution side, it would have been a more direct use of my Mechanical Engineering studies with power gen while distribution dealt more with statics and customer service.

Advice

Understand that if you are interviewed at the end of the internship and are offered a position, you will only be offered a role within the division you interned (Distribution, Generation, Nuclear, IT, Customer Service, WindLogic, Trading,...)

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2017 • Juno Beach, FL

What I liked

There was a great mix of networking and applicable work. There are a lot of intern events to get to know more about the company and other departments, and everyone is willing to take time out of there day for the interns. NextEra is a company that values their intern program and strives to make the experience memorable. There is plenty of people to meet and plenty of opportunity to take advantage of.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more work prepared for me in advance. The first few weeks were a bit slow, but it gave me the chance to find the work I wanted to do.

Advice

Network, network, network. And, don't be afraid to ask for anything. You are in a strategic position to gain exposure in any area of the company. Intern programs have structure, but there is always a way to get more of what you want out of it, whatever that may be.
