DNV

Outreach Intern

May - August 2022 • Albuquerque, NM

What I liked

I loved DNV's collaborative work environment. As a summer intern, I was given access to the full suite of staff onboarding and training, scheduled to meet regularly with their network of interns across North America, and was actively encouraged to reach out to experts within DNV to learn more about their careers. With these opportunities and a little initiative, my summer internship turned into one of the best learning and networking experiences of my career.

What I wish was different

Honestly, there is not much that I wish had been different. In an ideal world, it would be neat to meet the other interns in person or to have a set number of hours each week to work on a project more closely aligned with my career/intellectual interests.

Advice

Do not be afraid to reach out to your colleagues. People really are as open to helping as they seem!

Energy Data Science Intern

June - September 2022 • Oakland, CA

What I liked

I chose DNV because the company's values aligned with my own and it gave me a chance to get experience in data science as well as the energy industry. I've learned so much at DNV, not only through my team-specific projects, but also through intern gatherings, new-hire presentations, informational seminars, coffee chats with subject matter experts, and many of the other opportunities DNV has provided me with. Another great aspect of the internship was the integration of interns with the rest of the employees. The data science interns were onboarded to projects and given tasks that a full-time employee might typically do. I was very happy that the team trusted us with difficult tasks because it enabled me to learn way more than I expected. The employees at DNV also share a unique moral compass of environmentalism, which seems to be the main driver for everyone to perform their best. Most people at DNV are very passionate about decarbonization and the move toward the carbon-free electric grid, which was really inspiring to see as an intern.

Advice

My first project as an intern had me worried that I may have gotten lucky and wasn't qualified for the job. I reached out to my manager to explain what I was confused about and he filled all of my knowledge gaps in the project. Soon enough, I was finishing my first task confidently and my work was approved. Now, I have worked on many projects at DNV and I feel confident that I can tackle difficult and unfamiliar tasks. My takeaway from this is to be confident in your skills and embrace the discomfort of learning new environments. It takes a while to get up to speed, as it does with any company.

Energy Systems Intern

June - December 2021 • Chalfont, PA

What I liked

Good work-life balance and flexible work environment and hours, the freedom of working on whatever I wanted, great colleagues who will always help out as long as you reach out to them, line managers ensure that you are not too overloaded with work and miss deadlines.

What I wish was different

It would be a struggle to find work sometimes due to the high-level stuff being done and my lack of expertise. A dedicated internship program with a defined structure and end goals would improve the experience; it would be especially helpful for the days where there is no project work to be done

Advice

The internship is a learning experience not just for gaining industry knowledge, but also for making connections and networking, and being more professional minded. It is important to keep an open mind, you will always be learning new things.
