Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard

Computational Associate I

June 2022 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

Generous benefits that support many aspects of well-being including mental health. The Broad really is a world leader in genetics research, especially in cancer biology, you get to work and learn from the best of the best. Since they hire so many students straight out of college every year, as many leave for grad school, you are surrounded by peers with similar experiences. Computational employees can work from home.

What I wish was different

Experiences probably vary widely by lab, but the people I know were not given much support/training, rather expected to produce results and learn on your own. Entry-level researchers seem replaceable here, if you aren't productive enough, there are many other students ready to join the Broad.

Advice

The more questions you ask, the more you will learn and transition well into your job.

Graphic Design Intern

September - December 2022 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

I worked in the communications department and I had a fantastic time working there. They were super flexible with my school schedule and were great to work with as co-workers. I was always working on something fulfilling, mostly solo projects but I enjoyed the freedom they gave me over art direction. I seriously doubt I'll have this good an experience in the workforce again.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions both to co-workers and clients; everyone's friendly there and happy to help you if needed.

Research Associate

June 2017 - May 2020 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

The employee community is very vibrant. There was good work/life balance (although this varies by lab).

What I wish was different

The Broad tries hard to seem like an inclusive environment for employees who belong to marginalized communities (POC, LGBTQ+, women, etc). In reality, I perceive their actions to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion as performative, and believe that leadership & HR continue to fail to make meaningful changes. Also, as is the norm for institutes of higher-ed/academia, there are frequent instances of sexual harassment/assault. For the cases that I am aware of, resulting actions taken by leadership & HR have failed to ensure future safety for the survivors.

Advice

Advocate for yourself and your growth. Also, report all observed or suspected sexual harassment/assault to HR. If the victim is a student, Broad HR is required to inform their university's Title IX office.
