Amazon Robotics

Robotics Project Engineer Intern

June - August 2022 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed working with my team. Everyone was very friendly and helpful in answering questions I had regarding my project. Another thing I enjoyed was visiting multiple Amazon Robotic sites. It was mind blowing seeing their warehouses in operation.

Advice

Having a good understanding of Amazon's leadership principles are vital for doing your job. Also, ask lots of questions as much of your role may be ambiguous.

Software Engineer

May - August 2020 • Westborough, MA

What I liked

I loved the experience of working at Amazon! My team was very supportive of the whole virtual experience! They reached out often to catch up with me and made sure I was making progress on my project! The work was definitely very interesting and kept me on my toes! The culture is very result-driven and I think it suited me very well.

What I wish was different

I missed a great in-person experience to connect with my coworkers and see all the robots in action. Nevertheless, it was still great

Advice

Be proactive about your projects. It's your job to deliver results. Ask questions and make it point to learn more than what you are assigned. While you do all this, enjoy the journey. I can assure you it is going to change your outlook on the Software Engineering role for the better!

Advanced Robotics Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • North Reading, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the collaborative working environment I found within my team. I had a designated project I was working on, but it wasn't a completely irrelevant intern project. The way Amazon Robotics structured their intern program allowed me to meet the other interns working in my department, without having it so I only got to know those interns. I truly felt like part of my team and the full-time employees were really happy to help me learn about what was going on within the company and help me on projects.

What I wish was different

I was on a team with a smaller amount of interns (since most of them come in as software engineers) meaning I didn't get as much time to know the other interns as a typical intern would. Even with this, we did plenty of intern outings where I got to know them!

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help, and be prepared to learn a lot. When working on Amazon teams, I was thrown headfirst into a complex project where my team didn't expect me to know everything. This meant I got to learn a lot and show off the skills I already knew, but if I didn't speak up when I was confused it definitely would have been a lot harder to keep up.

Software Developer Co-Op

July - December 2019 • North Reading, MA

What I liked

My team made sure I was always doing important work that would last beyond my tenure, while still ensuring that I had the freedom to learn and explore different subjects and tools. I was encouraged from my first day to voice my opinions, and never be afraid to ask questions. I'm confident leaving that I added value during my time there, and that I took everything I could from the experience, both in terms of skill building and professional experience!

What I wish was different

If I could change one thing - I wish there were more UMASS Lowell students doing Co-Ops and internships there! I was proud to represent a state school in a prestigious program, but I also know that my voice- and the voices of other UML students - are necessary for the creation of an inclusive and diverse team.

Advice

The best way to get help is to get really good at explaining your work. When you need a question answered - which will be often, if you're anything like me - be prepared to describe what you were trying to do, how you tried to do it, and why. You'll save your team the time of trying all the things you already did, and maybe get an explanation of a better solution, not just a fix for your own.

Software Development Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • North Reading, MA

What I liked

I had a fantastic manager, mentor, and team who were a pleasure to work with and promoted a healthy work culture.

What I wish was different

From talking to other interns, the quality of the experience seemed to vary strongly from project to project and team to team. In addition, I had a lot of trouble with the Graebel relocation process, but that may have been a one-off.

Advice

The internship is as much of an interview as the actual coding interviews. Also, it's important to note that if you're hired into a QA intern role, the hiring pipeline is separate from the engineering hiring pipeline and it can be difficult to transfer your internship experience from one to the other.

Hardware and Operations Intern

May - August 2017 • Boston, MA

What I liked

They have an excellent internship program and do a lot for the interns. They take us to Red Sox games, scavenger hunts, networking events, and other fun activities. The culture at the office is excellent as well.

What I wish was different

Nothing I can think of.

Advice

They have intern housing for people coming from out of town, an I opted to use it. However, I didn't like the location, so I would recommend finding your own housing closer to the city.

Software Development Engineer Intern

June - August 2017 • North Reading, MA

What I liked

Amazon Robotics has a ton of amazing projects going on and it was fun to work in such an innovative environment. As an intern, a was given an extremely meaningful project that is set to roll out to all robotic fulfillment centers across the world in 2018. I also really enjoyed the culture - it has a midsize company feel because it is away from all the craziness in Seattle. Both my mentor and manager were extremely helpful throughout my internship, and it was also nice to have a relatively small, tight-knit group of other interns.

What I wish was different

North Reading is a pretty boring area and you will be very limited with your time outside work if you don't have a car. Getting started is a little tough because Amazon's internal development environment is tough to learn and understand. I don't think they did the best job giving an overview of all the different teams and projects going on, so it was hard to know where my team fit in.

Advice

Try to get a really good idea of what your project is and the different services/teams it interacts with before diving in. Also, explore Boston and get friendly with other interns - it really made the summer so much better.
