Statistical Programmer Intern

June - September 2020 • Burlingame, CA

What I liked

I learned SAS entirely from scratch, and the training process was really thorough. I also liked how we learned about the research/project workflow. I learned so much about Medicare data, and HHS in general. I especially liked the speaker series where current employees gave little talks about their careers and what kinds of projects they work on.

What I wish was different

My experience was all virtual, so of course I would have loved to go to the office in person. It would have been nice to get to know the other interns better, though I'm not sure how possible that would have been given that the internship was virtual.

Advice

Even if you feel like you have no knowledge of the health care system, I'd encourage you to apply! You learn so much during your internship.

Data and Policy Analyst Intern (Writer/Coordinator)

June 2019 • Burlingame, CA

What I liked

- I have a really great manager that is getting me involved in many different projects - The human resources coordinator for the intern program is also very responsive - Many interns are hired so the social atmosphere is great - Very young company and a very supportive working environment - Pet-friendly office!

What I wish was different

- Very steep learning curve because of the subject matter of their projects - There is a two-week mandatory training that full-time hires go through and interns also have to take this training - would be nice to have the training condensed for interns to allow for more time to familiarize with project work

Advice

Be prepared to learn a lot, ask a lot of questions, and have yourself thrown into the deep end of healthcare policy.
