Substance Use Safety Graduate Student Assistant (open to work study and non-work study)

The Longhorn Wellness Center (LWC) is a department in the Division of Student Affairs that promotes student well-being and creates a healthier campus community utilizing a public health approach. SHIFT seeks to engage the UT community in dialogue that changes the culture of campus substance misuse to one of well-being. 

 

The Graduate Student Assistant hired into this role will work with both the LWC and SHIFT to implement and expand substance use safety programming on campus. 

 

Responsibilities

  1. Develop initiatives to reduce risk and provide alternative events during higher risk drinking times.
  2. Assist with continued development of the Operation Naloxone program area including workshop presentations.
  3. Assist with the development, facilitation and evaluation of alcohol and other drug workshop content.
  4. Provide support and participate in discussions about substance use safety on campus.
  5. Benchmark and assess student trends around substance use behaviors.
  6. Assist with crafting health messaging materials focused on substance use safety.
  7. Meet and interact with campus partners to grow our programming.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, health communications, psychology or social work.
  • Full-time enrollment in a UT Austin graduate program, such as public health, health communications, counseling, psychology, higher education administration, or social work.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or interest in working in health promotion, public health and substance use safety initiatives. 
  • Experience or interest in working with college-aged populations.
  • Eager to use public health assessment, implementation, and evaluation skills.

Time Commitment & Workplace

  • Approximately 15 hours/week for $19/hour.
  • Option for remote and in-person work. Expected to be onsite at least 50% of working hours.
  • Some evening and weekend workshops and events.
  • Start Fall 2024 and continue through the 2024-25 academic year.
