Community Service Officer - Intern

Job Summary

The Intern Community Service Officer provides a variety of public safety and municipal services including animal control, complaint processing, and parking enforcement. The CSO Intern monitors and maintains law enforcement records, assists with code enforcement and compliance, receives routine calls for service and assists patrol officers with non-criminal public safety functions. The internship position has a maximum employment duration of 36 months, subject to extension at the determination of the Chief of Police. 

Responsibilities

1. Answers calls for service and responds and follows up to citizen complaints (e.g. animal, parking, garbage), preliminarily investigates code compliance concerns and possible violations, and forwards code compliance concerns to the CSO Manager.
2. Assists the patrol division as appropriate.
3. Issues citations for parking violations.
4. Attends and testifies in court, on as needed basis, involving any cases they are working on.
5. Maintains police fleet and coordinates for repairs.  
6. Assists with traffic control at special events, accidents, or during other circumstances.
7. Picks up and delivers evidence to other jurisdictions.  
8. Orders supplies for medical bags, squad kit bags, drug kits, and evidence gathering. Orders dog license tags, and updates and orders forms used by the police department.  
9. Responds to citizen calls or walk-ins. Provides resources and routing.
10. Works at the police front desk in the absence of records staff.
11. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
 

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Current enrollment in a Minnesota POST Board approved law enforcement program at an accredited college or university.
