Title: Targeted Advocacy Coordinator

Supervisor: Director of Government Relations, Pesticides and Birds Campaign

Location: Remote; One position dedicated each to the Western and Eastern halves of the United States

Duration of Position: 5-6 Months, Approximately May-August/September/October.

Compensation:  $30-50/Hour (and potentially school credit, commensurate with experience)

Position Summary:

This is a paid contractor position with American Bird Conservancy’s Pesticides and Birds Campaign.  The specific duties will be determined based in part on the candidate’s interests; projects may include conducting virtual outreach to partner organizations, state agencies and federal agencies, developing educational materials on pesticide impacts on wildlife, writing op-eds and other professional communications, evaluating Federal and State laws and regulations, evaluating and researching Federal and State agency pesticide policies, assisting in organizing Fly-Ins, reading and analyzing published scientific studies, and working with stakeholders. There may be some travel involved. The Targeted Advocacy Coordinator(s) will be part of our larger Policy and Threats team and will have the opportunity to attend biweekly staff meetings and work alongside the rest of the team.

Primary Duties:

• Analyze conservation impact of legislation and/or policy;
• Analyze past legislative and regulatory efforts;
• Write and place op-eds, letters to the editor, blog posts, and other forms of written communication;
• Review and summarize scientific literature to guide conservation strategies;
• Prepare fact sheets and other educational materials for various audiences;
• Conduct strategic outreach to target audiences 
• Represent American Bird Conservancy at partner meetings; expenses will be covered if any travel is required

Position Requirements: 

1. Strong interest in wildlife conservation and/or environmental toxicity
2. Understanding of basic principles of biology, physiology, government, and/or law
3. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Software (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint)
4. Self-motivated
5. Grassroots organizing skills preferred, not required
6. Strong writing skills 
7. Some graphic design/layout skills preferred, not required
8. Authorized to work in the US
9. Background screening required

Salary and Benefits:

• This is a short-term, part-time contractor position that pays $30-50/hour (depending upon experience) for a term of 4-6 months
• Unfortunately, since this is a part-time contract, benefits are not included
