We are looking for a Senior Analyst to join Wood Mackenzie’s Asia Pacific Power and Renewables research team in Tokyo. The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing power and renewables research in Japan and other Asia Pacific markets. This will include gathering and tracking market data and trends, updating models and outlooks, writing high-impact and original research reports, and supporting clients and business growth.

The successful candidate will have an impact on the business strategy and investment decisions of a range of companies in Japan and globally.  A strong understanding of power market trends and ability to quickly master and analyse new areas will be critical to engage clients and produce high-impact research.

The power market services supported by this role include the Asia Pacific Power and Renewables, PowerRT Japan, and EPSI Japan power dispatch software.  Our company serves a wide range of clients  from power utilities, developers, investors, trading houses, energy companies, end-users, governments and equipment manufacturers.

This role is an excellent opportunity to expand a career in the power and renewables sector as a market expert and thought leader. There will be regular opportunities to present research and discuss views with our in-house experts, on client webinars, at high-profile regional and global industry events, and to share views with leading media outlets.  There will also be opportunities to work with our Power and Renewables consulting team on key client projects.

Wood Mackenzie has a dynamic and expanding team in the Asia Pacific with offices spanning Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, Australia, India and Southeast Asia.  This role will be part of our global Power & Renewables business which is a team of highly respected industry experts who produce market-leading research covering onshore and offshore wind, solar PV, energy storage, gas-fired and coal-fired power, nuclear, power market design, electric vehicles, hydrogen and other emerging technologies.

About you and how you can excel in this role

You are excited about exploring challenging and complex topics related to the global Energy Transition and how they practically will impact markets, companies and people today and in the future. You love to analyse data and have excellent quantitative skills either through a business, economics, engineering, science or similar background.

Proven research experience working as a market analyst or consultant for leading energy or power companies is highly valued, but we are open to candidates with a variety of backgrounds including those transitioning from similar roles in other sectors.

The position is based in our office in downtown Tokyo. Fluency in spoken and written English and Japanese is mandatory, although analytical thinking and communication are more important than perfect language abilities.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be expected to have the following qualities, qualifications and experience:

  • High interest and knowledge of power and energy markets in Japan.
  • Experience in modelling, forecasting and power trading are an advantage.
  • Knowledge of companies and a network of contacts is highly relevant for this role.

  • Strong writing, communication and presentation skills.
  • Bi-lingual spoken and written language ability in English and Japanese.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a global team
  • Strong organising, planning and time management skills to work to deadlines
