Senior Associate, Global Cooling

Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Over the past 20 years, CHAI has pioneered a holistic and collaborative approach to transform markets for drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines in the global health context. CHAI partners closely with manufacturers, purchasers, and governments to create healthy, sustainable markets for critical products at scale. For example, the market for HIV antiretroviral drugs in LMICs--which did not exist 20 years ago--has grown to US$2 billion per year today and delivers lifesaving treatment to 30 million people.

Recognizing that climate change presents tremendous health risks, we are now entering markets to address urgent climate and health problems. Our innovative Clean Cooling program is one of our leading climate and health initiatives, with an audacious goal to avert billions of tons of CO2 emissions, mitigate the impact of extreme heat, and save households ~$1 trillion in energy spending, by catalyzing rapid commercialization and market penetration for next-generation, affordable room air conditioners (RACs).

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skillsets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

Overview of Program:

Cooling will be one of the largest drivers of greenhouse gas emissions over the coming years as people across the world buy an additional ~4.5B RAC units to adapt to a warming world. The majority of this growth will come from India and other LMICs where RAC penetration is low today. While access to space cooling is critical for health and productivity, without intervention, the resulting emissions from this massive growth in RACs are expected to contribute 0.5 degrees Celsius to global surface temperature by 2100.

The need to build an transformative, sustainable market for energy-efficient RACs is sizeable and urgent. CHAI believes, through partnerships, innovation, and incentives, that we can drive a rapid and widespread shift to higher efficiency RACs, and avert 60+ gigatons of emissions by 2050.
