Texas Sustainability Communications Intern

Summary. The Texas Sustainability Communications Intern’s primary focus will be on development and posting of social media content. The Office of Sustainability endeavors to both educate the campus community on sustainability issues as well as highlight and celebrate academic and operational sustainability efforts led by students, staff, and faculty across campus and the greater community. You may also be asked to provide support for other Office of Sustainability programs, events, and initiatives.

Specific Job Functions:

  • Create and sustain fresh content across the Office of Sustainability’s Instagram and other social media channels.
  • Create graphics as needed for social media, website, newsletter, and for events
  • Research content for social media posts to ensure accurate, fact-based posts
  • Respond to inquiries received over social media channels
  • Provide the student perspective on sustainability content
  • Support the Office of Sustainability’s other communications efforts (e.g. Facebook, Twitter/X, website) as needed
  • Perform other Office of Sustainability tasks as assigned



Requirements. Must be proactive and self-motivated. Demonstrated strong written communications skills and creativity. Comfortable professionally interacting and communicating with students, staff, and faculty. Enthusiasm for sustainability. Ability to work both independently and as a team. Proficient in Instagram, Twitter (X), and Facebook. Demonstrated strong time management skills and high attention to detail. Must be available multiple days per week to post to social media channels.

Preferred Skills: Experience developing graphics/copy. Experience managing social media channels for an organization. Experience with Meta Business Suite. Experience tracking and analyzing social media engagement data. Basic video editing skills. Experience developing, implementing, and continuing engagement around social media content. Experience and knowledge in sustainability (such as coursework, volunteer work, prior employment). Experience and knowledge in social media best practices for organizations.

 

Wage. $15.00 per hour, 10 hours per week

Location. Hybrid work environment. Office located in Student Services Building (SSB) 1.302 

Start Date/Duration. Preferred start date of August 2024. Two semester commitment required. Possibility of summer work.

By the end of this internship, the Texas Sustainability Communications Intern will:

  • Gain email writing, meeting, and other professional communications skills.
  • Have planned, scheduled, and posted stories, reels, and to the grid for a full academic year.
  • Have tracked an analyzed engagement data for a full academic year.
  • Have a strong knowledge of every day local and global sustainability issues.
  • Improve their ability to work as a team using effective interpersonal communication and conflict resolution to meet the team’s goals.

As a Communications Intern, students will strengthen the below competencies. 

  • Oral/Written Communications: Articulate thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively in written and oral forms. By speaking in meetings, strengthen interpersonal communications skills and ability to express ideas to others. By writing copy for social media, will strengthen professional writing skills.
  • Professionalism/Work Ethic: Demonstrate personal accountability and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a collaborative team environment consisting of student and professional staff.
  • Critical Thinking/Problem Solving: Strengthen the use of sound reasoning to analyze issues, make decisions, and overcome problems. Develop and implement creative new ideas about how to engage students and advance the Office of Sustainability's mission through its social media channels.
  • Teamwork/Collaboration: Build collaborative relationships with teammates. Develop ability to work within a team structure.
