Senior Manufacturing Equipment Engineer

Develop and improve new automation equipment and assembly lines for Tesla’s advanced cell manufacturing equipment for cutting-edge Tesla Energy Batteries. Collaborate with Engineering (Design and Manufacturing), Quality, and Process teams to bring the new product from initial design, through prototype development and finally into full production. Validate and characterize new or current equipment and fixtures for introduction to the production floor. Lead safety and ergonomic improvements to production equipment that meets or exceeds regulations and best practices. Collaborate with external equipment suppliers on equipment design and improvement. Work with Controls Engineers to troubleshoot and recover processes by PLC, HMI, or tool management software, to then implement changes or improvements. Create detailed manufacturing instructions to define new processes and document new equipment operations. Develop preventive maintenance procedures and a comprehensive spares list to maximize the OEE of equipment. Train technicians and line operators on manufacturing processes. Debug and optimize automated processes to maximize cycle time and specify hand tools for manual assembly tasks. Coordinate continuous improvement projects to drive equipment improvements based on PFMEA or DFMEA risk assessment. Create machine interactions with a plant-wide Manufacturing Execution System (MES).  

Requirements:  Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering, or related. Five (5) years of progressive experience in automation, electro-mechanical systems, or a combination thereof. Employer will accept a Master’s degree or equivalent in Engineering, or related and three (3) years of experience in automation, electro-mechanical systems, or a combination thereof in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and five (5) years of progressive experience as described above.

Work experience to include: 2D and 3D CAD modeling software; Process Safety Management (PSM) principles and standards; Creating and validating layouts, tooling drawings, and pneumatic and electrical schematics; Process and Instrumentation diagram (P&ID) creation and editing; Basic fabrication, and hand-tool machining; and Statistical process control (SPC) and trend rule charting.  Successful completion of reference and background checks is required.
