Of course Massachusetts is home to Martha's Vineyard and the Boston Red Sox. However, do you know about its civil rights history? Martin Luther King, Jr. met his wife (Coretta) in Boston. Dr. King obtained his Ph.D. at Boston University, and Coretta attended the New England Conservatory on an academic scholarship. Are you aware that the Massachusetts State House served as the stage for dozens of speeches during the Women's Suffrage Movement? Boston is also home to the Freedom Trail.

FHWA's Massachusetts Division is pleased to announce it is furthering our legacy in history by offering an opportunity for a student to experience civil rights as a practitioner through the Pathways Program.

When considering if Cambridge, MA is right for you, please consider all the great things Massachusetts and the MA Division Office has to offer:

Ranked by U.S. News and World Report as #18 in their 2022-2023 list of Best Places to Live in the USA, Boston is one of America's oldest and most unique cities with a little something for everyone. Boston is a historic City, home of the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere, and premiere historical sites located along the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail including Bunker Hill, the Old North Church, Faneuil Hall, Boston Common and the USS Constitution.

Boston is “wicked smaht” as the home of America’s first public library (1653) and currently more than 50 colleges and universities in the greater Boston area, including MIT, Harvard, and the Berklee College of Music. It is where you can find the New England Aquarium, Museum of Science, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Ballet, and countless other galleries and venues hosting performances every day of the year. It is also home to world class championship professional sports, the Boston Marathon, and the Head of the Charles Regatta.

Boston is a very walkable city with its downtown the site of the nation’s first public subway system (1898) which has since grown to today’s MBTA regional transportation network of subway, bus, trolley, train, and harbor ferry services spanning hundreds of miles of eastern Massachusetts, stitching together the urban core to the neighborhoods, the suburbs, and the cities beyond.
