Distance Learning Specialist

Position Summary:
The Distance Learning Specialist [DLS] reports to and works collaboratively with the School Programs Coordinator and is a critical member of the education programs team. The DLS is responsible for implementing virtual distance learning programs for student groups throughout the school year. This position teaches primarily to 4th-7th grade students at schools throughout the state through interactive videoconference programs. The DLS may expect to work collaboratively with staff from the Museum's education and digital media departments as well as other staff. The DLS works under moderate supervision with minimal latitude. Must consistently display excellent verbal and written communications skills and sound independent judgment, maintain a professional, respectful, organized, positive, customer-oriented focus and a flexible, calm demeanor. The DLS works a 25 hour work week, typically Monday-Friday, mornings to early afternoons; schedule may vary depending on needs.
Essential Job Duties
• Leads at least 10 distance learning programs over videoconference per week. • Provides administrative support for the distance learning program, such as tracking statistics, program reports, and scheduling distance learning programs. • Assists with content and technology updates to current distance learning programs. • Assists with researching, developing, and implementing new distance learning program topics. • Provides ongoing feedback to the supervisor about the programs, and conducts evaluations to measure program success. • Supports the Education Department in program initiatives for other audiences including teacher, student, adult, and member audiences as needed. • Works collaboratively with Museum departments to ensure clear communication and fulfill assigned duties. • Prioritizes safety and security when planning and performing work. Continuously assesses safety conditions to ensure staff and visitor safety. • Personal computer and Internet proficiency related to all duties performed. • Design and successfully implement creative and engaging educational programs. • Plan and manage work, including competing priorities. • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Education, Museum Studies/Public History, History, or related field. • Minimum of 1 year experience in development and facilitation of student lessons and activities in a museum, K-12 classroom, and/or informal learning environment. Possesses an outgoing, friendly, and welcoming personality with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. • Demonstrates dynamic oral presentation skills, including energetic style, clear diction, and the ability to adapt presentations to various age groups. Demonstrates high comfort-level speaking publicly to large and small groups of varied ages. Demonstrated experience presenting and/or teaching in a virtual setting using videoconferencing and/or interactive teaching technology. • Possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage a busy teaching schedule and administrative tasks simultaneously. Experience in basic office computer hardware and software is required.
Preferred Qualifications: Extensive experience in development and facilitation of student lessons and activities in a museum, classroom, and/or informal learning environment. • Experience using technology to manage data in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, create Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, communicate via email, and/or create hand out documents. • Knowledge of Texas History and familiarity with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills beneficial. Bi-lingual English-Spanish language skills a plus.
