Wildlife Program – Diversity Division
Olympia, Washington – Thurston County
Support the Division’s work to lead efforts statewide to manage, conserve, and recover Washington’s nongame wildlife and play an active role in protecting and improving their habitats. The Wildlife Diversity Division focuses efforts on over 200 wildlife species of greatest conservation need (SGCN) identified in WDFW’s State Wildlife Action Plan, including those listed as endangered, threatened, or sensitive.
Assist in assessing species distribution, abundance, population trends, and threats to make recommendations for their recovery, and implementing recovery actions. Oversee permitting for wildlife rehabilitation, falconry, and scientific collection.

In this dynamic role, you act as the proxy for Division Manager at Wildlife Program Senior Staff and other forums.
With your experience, you will develop and implement a Biodiversity grant program to support partners in their implementation of priority actions identified in the State Wildlife Action Plan.
You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork, supporting collaboration and problem solving with Regional Program Managers and Division coordination with regional staff, including leading annual work-planning.

Here is some of what you will be doing:
Diversity Division Budget Oversight and Management:
- Manages and administers an annual operating budget of over $18 million under the direction of and delegation by the Division Manager.
- Ensures careful and strategic management of federal and state contracts for conservation activities, including SWG, PR, and others.
Diversity Division Operations Support:
- Directly supervises staff and guides policy for wildlife rehabilitation, falconry, and scientific permitting for the Wildlife Program.
- Defines and nurtures clear roles and responsibilities between Diversity headquarters and regional staff, while also leaving room for creativity and innovation.
- Supports Division Manager, Section Managers, and staff with identification, facilitation, collaboration, and implementation of conservation actions.
- Works with Division Manager and other Section Managers to create, support, and implement Division Visioning and Wildlife Program Conservation Initiatives both within the Department and through interactions with external partners.
Policy Support:
- Ensures the Division’s rule-making work (e.g., listing classifications, rehab, falconry) is consistent with agency policies, direction, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Develops and implements statewide regulations, policies, and procedures for Diversity conservation activities and ensures consistent application across Sections.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Setting, including hazards:
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment, with exposure to hazards mostly limited to those commonly found in government office environments. Time may be spent outdoors engaged in wildlife and habitat conservation activities on the ground or on the water.
- Must be willing to work in inclement weather, over difficult terrain, including slippery rocks, steep banks, and sticky mud and have a willingness to perform in a safe and efficient manner.

Schedule:
- Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Incumbent must be willing to work non-scheduled work week.

Travel Requirements:
- Local or regional travel is required to meet with regional staff, attend committee meetings, evaluate properties, conduct general business, or attend or provide training.

Tools and Equipment:
- Standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.) and operation of a motor vehicle.

Customer Interactions:
- Infrequent contact with members of the public, including some contact with those who may be angry, distraught, or frustrated. Frequent contact with partners (state, federal, tribal, and NGO). Responsible for legislative, contentious issue resolution and leaders of major stakeholder interaction. Provide policy and technical direction to internal and external program and agency professional staff involving complex or controversial studies or projects. May have policy level negotiation, interaction, or discussion with other agencies at both the state and federal level.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher graduate degree in environmental or natural resources, wildlife management, biological or physical science field or related discipline.
And
- Five (5) years of professional level experience managing senior-level staff.
License:
- Valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Natural resource management and planning experience.
- Experience developing, managing, and administering complex budgets.
- Ability to foster a positive, effective working relationships with colleagues and partners.
- Ability to make timely, effective decisions on critical matters.
- Ability to recognize and prioritize competing and divergent issues while still maintaining professional attitudes and work processes.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulatory requirements related to wildlife species management, land use practices, policy and rule development, and budget administration and implementation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree in Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources Management, or related field.
- Five (5) years of experience working with wildlife, natural resource, land management, or related field.
- Experience in the legislative process, reviewing bills and assessing agency impacts.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities in the areas of wildlife conservation and management and conservation planning.
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to build effective partnerships and work groups.
- Extensive budget development, management, and administration experience.
- Experience leading multiple, complex projects and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
- Experience with planning and public policy formulation.
