Engineering Technician, Cell Engineering
What to Expect
The Cell Quality Team is seeking a technician to support incoming quality testing, root cause analysis investigations, critical Li-ion cell component analysis, and data collection in both manufacturing and lab environments.
This technician is expected to support and lead projects focused on improving field reliability and safety, production throughput, and cost savings. The person for this role must exhibit the motivation, questioning attitude, and attention to detail needed to not only challenge the status quo, but also identify and drive process improvements.
The Cell Quality team is a subset of the Cell Engineering team within the R&D organization. The group supports development of new mass production cell candidates by guiding design decisions, contributing to cell supplier specification requirements, and collaborating on cell material and process development projects. Cell Quality also conducts thorough failure analysis investigations to identify and present critical safety and reliability risks to suppliers as well as design, manufacturing, research, and safety teams.
What You’ll Do
- Support regular Cell Quality activities in Gigafactory Nevada, including
- Support incoming quality tasks to ensure manufacturing capability and product reliability
- Manage non-conforming cell material flow and material disposition while working closely with internal and external teams to quickly identify and resolve any cell-related issues
- Assist in the identification, and resolution of manufacturing and design issues by leading root cause analysis investigations
- Utilize specialized lab equipment to perform thorough failure analysis procedure
- Participate in audits of Tesla and supplier systems to maximize effectiveness of the team’s root cause analysis documentation and presentations
- Work cross-functionally with design, manufacturing, supply chain, quality, and research teams to conduct unique analyses and investigations in support of large, high-impact Cell Engineering projects
- Participate in and lead continuous improvement activities within the team as well as with cross-functional teams and suppliers
- Support FMEA activities to ensure design and manufacturing issues are identified and risks are mitigated
- Independently and accurately collect, analyze, and interpret data to provide actionable feedback to suppliers as well as design, manufacturing, quality, and research teams
- Anticipate and identify potential problems, take preventative action, and communicate lessons learned to the team
What You’ll Bring
- Strong motivation to learn and use advanced characterization and analysis techniques on various Li-ion cells and battery packs
- Hands on experience inspecting and disassembling small components
- Highly detail-oriented with exceptional documentation, organization, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to use technological tools and business system applications to manage, synthesize, and interpret data
- Knowledge of basic electrical and battery theory concepts
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to lift and sort parts of up to 25 pounds as required
- Experience working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
- Flexibility to work long hours and weekends on short notice
