PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Mercy Corps is a leading global organization powered by the belief that a better world is possible. In disaster, in hardship, in more than 40 countries around the world, we partner to put bold solutions into action — helping people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within.
Mercy Corps manages and maintains its Learning Management System (LMS), “Talent Development” and is updating its catalog of course offerings to our 6000+ team members globally. Through Mercy Corps’ partnership with Humentum (our course provider), we will be adding new courses into the online platform, removing obsolete courses currently in the LMS, and updating our catalog. The new courses will range in diverse topics from HR (Human Resources) to professional development to new language learning.
The Learning Technology Content Library Intern will receive the proper permissions in the LMS to learn how to build courses and curricula in the system using the course files and course descriptions provided to us by Humentum, catalog these courses properly in our database, and launch each course for team members to enroll in.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Gain in-depth exposure to the backend management of a major Learning Management System (Schoox)
  • Build courses using key features of the LMS’ content development tools
  • Learn the process of course creation and how to find and incorporate various media elements into eLearning
  • Categorize learning content to make it easily accessible and searchable for teams
  • Provide a working knowledge of the learning functions and needs of the international non-governmental organization sector
  • Gain experience in a multi-cultural work environment, building and making courses accessible for a global team across time zones, languages, and geographies, many of whom operate in complex, challenging environments
DELIVERABLES:
  • Add and update ~600 new courses into the LMS
  • For each course, download the SCORM package, upload to the LMS, name the course, add descriptions, and create thumbnail icons as necessary
  • Categorize each course in our database and launch each course
  • Combine certain courses into Curricula if multilanguage versions for the same course exist
  • Add a feedback poll to each course in various languages
  • Additional deliverables, time permitting:
  • Build a set of lists recommending people to courses based on their roles or topics of interest
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
  • A college or university degree (no more than 1 year since graduation) or one in progress in Learning & Development, Instructional Design, Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies, Libraries, Education, Digital Media, Communications (or a related field)
  • Excellent organization skills – understands the value of meticulously documenting categories, tags, and updating the location of items as necessary
  • Thorough attention to detail – always checks grammar and punctuation, and notices preventable errors through thorough review and solicits feedback from others
  • Open, transparent, and clear communication skills – ability to actively reach out with any issues, delays, updates, and successes without being prompted. This is especially important working remotely.
  • Experience working on the backend of an online site uploading and cataloging
  • Excellent time management skills – due to the short-term nature of the project, staying on track to deliverables is key.
  • Creative problem solver – able to research technical issues, troubleshoot, and communicate findings
  • Ability to work productively within a collaborative, consensus-seeking team
  • Interest in working in LMS Administration or the field of eLearning Development
  • Strong attention to ensuring quality and consistency of the deliverables
A plus if:
  • Experience in the backend of e-learning platforms (though not required)
  • Experience building courses on learning platforms
  • Knowledge of adult learning and development principles and practices (Helpful but not required)
  • Have successfully categorized bulk content for teams
  • Fluency or proficiency reading and writing in another language (not required)
