Library Services Specialist II - St. Stephens Branch

Catawba County Library System is recruiting for a Library Services Specialist II with excellent customer and information services, programming, collaboration, and outreach skills, who is enthusiastic about the value of early literacy and lifelong learning. The Library Services Specialist II works closely with the St. Stephens Librarian to plan, promote, and implement programs, services, and provide responsive reference and technology assistance for diverse customers' information needs. This includes planning, coordinating, and presenting story times, STEAM programs, summer learning events, outreach, and other programming and services as well as working as an active member of a system-wide team to ensure effective and engaged youth services for the community. Regular duties will also include providing quality customer service and reader's advisory for all ages; assisting customers with the use of computers and other devices; and creating marketing and promotional materials for programming. Schedule includes regularly scheduled evenings and weekend rotations to open/close library as the supervisor on duty.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides excellent customer service to library patrons and co-workers.
  • Provides a full range of welcoming and responsive library services, including intermediate level reference, research, technology assistance, circulation, reader's advisory, and workforce development.
  • Plans, coordinates and/or facilitates a variety of engaging library programs for all ages including story times (implementing Every Child Ready to Read methodology), STEAM and/or life-long learning programs for children, teens and adults under the direction of the St. Stephens Librarian.
  • Participates in planning and implementation of Summer Learning and other literacy initiatives including Born to Read and 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.
  • Provides circulation desk services including checking in and out materials, setting up library card accounts and resolving account issues, locating reading materials, conducting sales of materials and supplies, accepting fines and fees, placing holds or transfers of items.
  • Facilitates a welcoming library facility and responsive public services by proactively maintaining library facilities, services, collections, and equipment that are convenient, accurate and meet community needs. Handling emergency situations, patron complaints, or facility issues.
  • Provides one-on-one technology assistance to help patrons access digital resources or troubleshoot technology problems.
  • Coordinates bookbagger outreach program to provide materials to area daycares ensuring to promote service and regularly survey participants.
  • Engages in outreach and serves as a liaison to community agencies that serve adults as well as children and their caregivers, including schools, daycares and preschools, and other community organizations to build community presence and raise awareness of the library's essential role in early literacy, lifelong learning, and economic revitalization.
  • Works collaboratively with Catawba County School systems to support K-64 and student learning through implementation of collaborative access and learning project plans.
  • Administers surveys, prepares statistics and reports related to programming and reference services, and facilitates performance measurements demonstrating successful achievement of library outcomes.
  • Regularly scheduled as the Supervisor on Duty for evening and weekend rotations to open/close library and serves as back-up for the St. Stephens Librarian.
  • Assists with staff scheduling, daily workflow and training of library staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Assists with preparation and promotion of library events, services, programming, and outreach to ensure that patrons/citizens are aware of available library services and programs.
  • Designs and creates exhibits.
  • Assists system-wide with staffing and library services as needed.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Education, English, Communications, or Library Science; OR 
  • Associate’s Degree in Business, Education, English, Communications, Library Science, or a related degree and one year of experience in a library or related public facing customer service or educational setting; OR
  • High School diploma and three years of experience in a library or related public facing customer service or educational setting
 
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • A valid driver’s license with a safe driving record 
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence with an ability to understand, empathize and exercise patience with people of a wide range of ages, abilities, and ethnicities
  • Excellent customer service skills and commitment to customer satisfaction are essential to providing our community with the best library service.
  • Ability to develop collaborations and facilitate successful programming and events with internal and external teams, effectively communicating the library’s mission, strategic plan, and philosophy with internal and external audiences
  • Extensive experience with technologies including Internet web browsers and productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite, and resume and job searching skills
  • Problem solving and conflict management skills, with a focus on developing positive solutions, are also important to maintaining a welcoming friendly environment in the library
  • Strong time management, initiative and organizational skills are required to manage a broad range of responsibilities with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to perform research using library equipment and resources, and instruct customers in the use of library resources and technologies
  • Early childhood education and early literacy skills for story time
  • Excellent reader's advisory skills to suggest reading materials for all ages
  • Highly motivated, with initiative and ability to work successfully independently as well as in a collaborative team environment
  • Must be adaptable to changing work hours including evenings and Saturdays; and must be willing to work at different locations system-wide as needed.
  • Position is considered light duty, lifting up to 20 pounds on a regular basis
