Summer Day Camp Counselor

We're looking for an enthusiastic, creative, and caring Summer Day Camp Counselor (internally known as Youth Development Leader) to inspire a love of learning in young minds and build memorable experiences at our Summer Day Camp programs. If you have open availability this Summer and would like to work between 20-40 hours per week and have weekends off, this is the perfect job for you.

Summer Day Camp Counselors lead various activities that aim to give children a well-rounded experience. Activities include physical play, teamwork, building positive relationships, and much more! You will provide enriching, safe, and memorable experiences to thousands of campers. You will help campers gain a sense of achievement, build friendships, and find their sense of belonging. You will supervise a group of campers at one of our theme camps in an elementary school in Austin and the surrounding area.

Availability: You can work Monday through Friday, shifts between the hours of 7:00 am – 6:30 pm. You have the ability to start onboarding and training between April-May 2023.

Pay Rate: $15.00 per hour for training and $16 per hour when Summer Camp begins.

What You’ll Do: 
  • At our theme camps you will build a positive relationship with each camper; actively engage with campers at all times to foster the positive development of each child and the group
  • You adhere to policies and procedures in a proactive manner, making the safety and care of children your primary focus.
  • You supervise campers during designated swim times
  • You actively facilitate and supervise campers during any field trips
  • You assist in enrollment, recording, and submitting daily attendance records and any other required documents.
  • You actively participate in all aspects of staff development, including team meetings, and pre-service training.
  • Promote the YMCA's character values, mission, wellness philosophy, and role in the community.
  • Lead by example the Y’s mission, vision, and values with program participants, members, staff, and guests. 
  • Become an Ambassador of the Y’s work and culture by being the ultimate storyteller of who we are as an organization and brand. 
  • Complete other duties as assigned.  

Working Conditions: 
Regular walking, reaching, bending, lifting, and standing. Must be able to routinely lift 10 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 40 lbs. 

What we’re looking for: 
Education and Experience: 
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent. Minimum age of 18 years.  
  • Related education and/or experience in childhood development  
  • Prior experience working with school-aged children preferred
