Government Relations Specialist

The Government Relations Specialist will gain professional, first-hand experience in state government while working in a deadline-driven environment at one of the largest state agencies in Texas.

You will have direct interaction with the top executives of HHSC as you work to support the GSR team to prepare HHSC executive leadership for select hearings and public meetings with various audiences including the Governor's Office, Lt. Governor's Office, Speaker of the House, all Senators and Representatives, and other legislative organizations and public officials. 

A typical day may include: coordinating and researching information for briefings and legislative summaries for HHSC executives to use during those meetings and working with HHSC subject matter experts to develop presentations on specific health and human services related topics.

Learning Objectives:
  • Developing concise materials to a broad audiences.
  • Distilling complex systems and technical information succinctly to broad audiences.
  • Preparing executives for briefings.
  • Gain soft skills including coalition and relationship building.

Internship Projects:
  • Coordinates, reviews and edits presentation materials and products 
  • Prepares presentations, briefing and legislative summary documents, and specialized research material for executive staff, legislative offices, committees, and public audiences

Candidates should have an interest in gaining experience in public and government relations, health and human services. Knowledge of the executive and legislative branches of state government. Researching, writing and editing skills. Skills in compiling and analyzing information. 
Ability to make decisions and solve problems effectively. Ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced environment. Ability to explain, advocate, and express facts and ideas and negotiate with individuals and groups, internally and externally and to build, establish, and maintain effective working relationships and coalitions.
