Metadata Curation Intern (Data to Insights)

The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program 
  
The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program empowers students to spend a summer handling a special project for the university designed to prepare them for life after graduation. Interns will work 19 hours per week for 10-weeks. These part-time internship positions offer a competitive compensation package that includes an hourly wage and housing assistance. Undergraduate students only are eligible to apply. The internship runs from May 30, 2023 to August 4, 2023. The application is due by February 12, 2023 at 11:59pm. 
  
Although internships range in subject matter and skill set, each position is designed to prepare all students for life after graduation. An additional component to the internship experience will be a ten-week workshop series to develop students’ career readiness. The weekly workshop will require in-person attendance on campus.

The Office 
The Data to Insights Initiative builds on decades of data and systems work at UT Austin to accelerate a path forward in support of the university’s strategic planning. It brings together Analytics expertise (formerly Institutional Analytics), Technical expertise (formerly Information Quest),and Functional expertise (drawn from both academic and administrative units). D2I relies on broad partnerships across the campus to achieve a new level of data integration to support data-informed, insightful decision making at all levels. D2I is and will continue to work with many system and process leaders, technical staff. data stewards, data consumers, decision makers, and many others across campus. Processes will include formal collaborative work, partnering for specific charters, occasional topical D2I InfoShare briefings, and working with and updating UT governance groups along with communities of interest groups. D2I is a major investment to not only accelerate and modernize the university’s data strategy, but also to enhance the institution’s trusted information infrastructure across many systems and data sources. This initiative is led by Brad Wheeler, chief strategist to the president for D2I.
 
The Position 
- Assist with the creation and management of high-quality data documentation, especially clear data definitions, using the Alation data management tool.
- Assist with customization of the tool, including templates, workflows, access, etc.
- Assist with documentation and training for the use of Alation itself.
- Collaborate with other members of the D2I Functional team to support effective and efficient use of the tool, internally and within the campus community.
- Other duties as assigned, including potentially assisting with other D2I Functional Team projects as needed.

Who You Are (Qualifications) 
- Attention to detail.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Familiarity with basic data formats, file structures, descriptive statistics.
