Communication & Events Intern (Office of Sustainability)

The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program 
  
The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program empowers students to spend a summer handling a special project for the university designed to prepare them for life after graduation. Interns will work 19 hours per week for 10-weeks. These part-time internship positions offer a competitive compensation package that includes an hourly wage and housing assistance.  Undergraduate students only are eligible to apply. The internship runs from May 30, 2023 to August 4, 2023. The application is due by February 12, 2023 at 11:59pm. 
  
Although internships range in subject matter and skill set, each position is designed to prepare all students for life after graduation. An additional component to the internship experience will be a ten-week workshop series to develop students’ career readiness. The weekly workshop will require in-person attendance on campus.

The Office 
Sustainability at The University of Texas at Austin is the work of the Office of Sustainability, established in 2009, and numerous campus partners that work in unison to implement the Sustainability Master Plan. Texas Sustainability maintains memberships with numerous organizations, including:
  • Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)
  • State of Texas Alliance for Recycling (STAR)
  • Texas Regional Alliance for Campus Sustainability (TRACS)
  • Tree Campus USA
  • US Green Building Council

The Position 
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the Office of Sustainability (OS) and convey a positive image to the public through orientation sessions, speaking engagements, and zero-waste events.
  • In partnership with the OS strategically plan for organizational growth and direction, via partnerships, and image-building for zero-waste events and sustainability communication across campus.
  • Identify and track current and potential partners to the OS (student orgs, departments, nonprofits, for-profit companies) and how they could benefit the UT’s sustainability.
  • Plan and host tabling events for incoming students
  • Engage and educate peers and staff to motivate behavior change, such as proper recycling techniques
  • Set-up and break-down compost and recycling services at specific orientation events/meetings in support of Resource Recovery
  • Collect and record compost and recycling data from events
  • Work with various UT departments to reach as many orgs as possible and continually improve services
  • Attend mandatory meetings and other team meetings as needed
  • Monitor and respond to team emails and inquiries promptly
  • Recruit, manage, support, and encourage Team Members and volunteers

Who You Are (Qualifications) 
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate effectively about sustainability and zero waste.
  • Demonstrated dedication and commitment to sustainability.
  • Desire to educate various groups on campus about the importance of decreasing environmental impact.
  • Willingness to sort through trash, recycling, and compost at events to minimize contamination.
  • Ability to attend orientation events at nights and be flexible in scheduling.
