Mental Health Promotion Intern (Longhorn Wellness Center, University Health Services)

The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program 
The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program empowers students to spend a summer handling a special project for the university designed to prepare them for life after graduation. Interns will work 19 hours per week for 10-weeks. These part-time internship positions offer a competitive compensation package that includes an hourly wage and housing assistance. Undergraduate students only are eligible to apply. The internship runs from May 30, 2023 to August 4, 2023. The application is due by February 12, 2023 at 11:59pm. 
  
Although internships range in subject matter and skill set, each position is designed to prepare all students for life after graduation. An additional component to the internship experience will be a ten-week workshop series to develop students’ career readiness. The weekly workshop will require in-person attendance on campus.

The Office 
The Longhorn Wellness Center (LWC) supports the missions of University Health Services and the Counseling and Mental Health Center by addressing priority college health issues. We do this using multi-level, evidence-based prevention strategies such as peer education, social marketing, social norm campaigns, environmental changes, and strategic campus partnerships.
 
The Position 
OUTREACH & EDUCATION:
  • Develop, implement, and facilitate evidence-based, culturally relevant health promotion programs and interventions
  • Respond to program requests from student groups and other UT Austin departments or faculty
  • Assist with developing and implementing workshops, presentations, trainings, and tabling events
  • Serve on campus-wide committees, taskforces, etc. as assigned
ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION:
  • Gather, compile, and synthesize data and related information to develop health and wellness initiatives and educational materials for diverse groups of students
  • Conduct process and outcome evaluations/assessments for programs and wellness initiatives
  • Coordinate the implementation of health and wellness assessment instruments, program evaluations, and other ongoing assessment initiatives
HEALTH MESSAGING & COMMUNICATION:
  • Assist in the development and dissemination of health communication and social marketing materials, including social media, dynamic web content, Healthyhorns TXT messaging and more
  • Synthesize health data and information into student relevant communication materials
  • Compile information for use in infographics, proposals, and annual reports as needed
Peferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Background (through coursework, past/current employment, or other avenues of learning) in health and wellness related areas, particularly around mental health promotion and suicide prevention
  • Experience in program planning, development, and evaluation
  • Excellent skills in facilitation, education, and communication
  • Proficiency in infusing health equity concepts across a variety of programs & services
  • Ability to work independently, follow-up on assignments, and take initiative on projects
  • Strong written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, staff, and student populations to deliver inclusive, culturally competent services and initiatives
  • Commitment to non-judgmental approach to a variety of health and wellness topics that is inclusive of a diverse range of values and viewpoints
  • Familiarity with campus culture and events
