UT Outpost Summer Operations Intern (Student Emergency Services)

The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program 
The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program empowers students to spend a summer handling a special project for the university designed to prepare them for life after graduation. Interns will work 19 hours per week for 10-weeks. These part-time internship positions offer a competitive compensation package that includes an hourly wage and housing assistance. Undergraduate students only are eligible to apply. The internship runs from May 30, 2023 to August 4, 2023. The application is due by February 12, 2023 at 11:59pm. 
  
Although internships range in subject matter and skill set, each position is designed to prepare all students for life after graduation. An additional component to the internship experience will be a ten-week workshop series to develop students’ career readiness. The weekly workshop will require in-person attendance on campus.

The Office 
UT Outpost is part of the Student Emergency Services unit. The UT Outpost is the free on-campus food pantry and career closet for all currently enrolled students at UT Austin. Emergencies and financial hardships can affect students in and outside of class. UT Outpost is here to support students with healthy food and gently used professional clothing.
 
The Position 
The UT Outpost strives to meet our students' needs and through this project, the intern will be able to provide valuable insight, feedback, and guidance as the program expands. 
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of UT Outpost; opening, closing, and daily tasks.
  • Manage UT Outpost front desk; complete administrative tasks, answer inquiries, provide customer service, etc. 
  • Receive, log, and process donations to UT Outpost.
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to assist with operations, drives, tabling, events, promoting, and other program needs.
  • Participate in MoveOut ATX summer drive event
  • Outreach and collaborate with student organizations, academic departments and University partners with the goal of promoting food and clothing drives. 
  • Educate campus community on food insecurity through drives, tabling, events, and programs.
  • Complete and submit all required documentation within requested timeframes.
  • Work in compliance with all university, departmental, and programmatic policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Maintain campus confidentiality, except when university policy and/or law mandates a report.
  • Other related functions as assigned.
  • Participate in all required Division of Student Affairs Internship Program cohort activities and assessments.

Role Specific Responsibilities (interns will rank preferences for roles during interviews). There will be one intern per role:

Food Pantry Intern
  • Ensure that UT Outpost and its team are adhering to regulations and guidelines in regards to food safety and health standards.
  • Coordinate all necessary tasks in regards to health and safety.
  • Update supervisor on pantry needs each week in regard to student demand.
 
Career Closet Intern
  • Ensure that UT Outpost and its team are adhering to regulations and guidelines in regards to clothing quality.
  • Design and maintain an engaging store layout.
  • Prepare and share Picks of the Week displays on a weekly basis.
 
Volunteer Coordinator Intern
  • Recruit new volunteers to ensure food pantry and career closet is fully staffed.
  • Maintain communication with all UT Outpost volunteers.
  • Oversee all volunteer onboarding, training, scheduling, and staffing.
  • Record volunteer hours, especially for those receiving class or internship credit for their work.
 
Outreach Intern
  • Assist with program collaborations between campus departments and partners.
  • Assist with the development of marketing campaigns and educational materials.
  • Collaborate with other student leaders to connect them with the proper resources.
 
Sustainability Intern
  • Ensure that UT Outpost operations are sustainable by promoting the preservation of food resources and clothing resources.
  • Ensure maximum consumption of donations with shorter lifespans in order to reduce and eliminate food waste.
  • Outreach to student organizations, academic departments and University divisions to support sustainable practices (ie. UT Microfarm, UT Farmstand, Trash to Treasure)
  • Track sustainable efforts for yearly report (ie. Food waste).

Who You Are (Qualifications) 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of campus food insecurity and financial related issues among college students.
  • Experience partnering with student organizations and/or university departments.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Experience working on teams or in groups to accomplish goals.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of discretion and uphold privacy and confidentiality of student records.
  • Demonstrated organizational, administrative, listening, and problem-solving skills.
