Job Location is 441 Saxony Road, Barn 7 Encinitas, CA 92024
DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:
  • Perform all duties associated with high-quality crop production in a greenhouse setting, including sowing, transplanting, thinning, managing healthy plant growth, watering, insect and disease control, managing pollination, seed processing, and establishing and monitoring optimal plant growth environments
  • Harvest and process seeds of greenhouse-grown crops, properly store seeds, manage pedigree information, and seed distribution
  • Coordinate work with a genotyping team, including harvesting leaf samples for high-throughput genotyping
  • Collect data on plant and seed characteristics for plant selection
  • Manage data using Microsoft Excel and additional plant breeding software
  • Improve plant quality by troubleshooting existing protocols and processes and developing new protocols or improving processes when needed
  • Organize and perform work with high accuracy and attention to detail
  • Independently manage their time, solve problems, and plan tasks to grow crops
  • Support the operational requirements of greenhouse facilities, including space planning, seed storage, and maintenance of the facility inventory
EXPERIENCE
 Required:
  • Experience growing crops from seed to seed.
  • 3+ years of experience with a master's degree or 5+ years with a bachelor's degree
 Preferred:
  • Experience in handling crops for seed production
  • Experience in plant biology-related lab work
  • Training and experience in plant breeding
  • Experience growing one or more of the following plant species: canola, rice, soybean, corn, and wheat
EDUCATION
Required:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, bachelor's degree in Agronomy or Plant Sciences preferred.
Preferred:
  • A Master's in Biological Sciences, bachelor's degree in Agronomy or Plant Sciences.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Required:
  • Experience growing crops for seed production in a greenhouse setting
  • Perform regular greenhouse activities, including irrigating, fertilizing, weed, pruning, cleaning, transplanting, maintaining healthy plants, harvesting, and proper seed storage
  • Be receptive to learning new methods and sharing existing knowledge of cultivating plants
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team will require very close attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in an interactive, goal-oriented environment
  • Ability to execute and lead multiple projects simultaneously involving several participants
  • Be able to work with detailed project schedules and foresee potential problems and solutions
  • Willing to monitor plants and experiments during the weekend on a rotating schedule or as needed
  • Ability to perform routine, repetitive tasks
  • Ability to communicate required information and keep accurate records of work performed
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse groups. Proven skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with personnel at all levels
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Successful completion of the Institute's background investigation
  • Willing to sign a confidentiality agreement
  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be willing to work an adjusted schedule to support research needs
  • Must be willing to work on weekends and holidays when necessary
  • Must be willing to frequently participate in lifting, bending, standing, reaching, squatting, walking, twisting, and turning
  • Must be able to work in high temperature and humidity conditions periodically throughout the summer months
