Internships at D. E. Shaw Research - Computational Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Drug Discovery, Machine Learning)
D. E. Shaw Research seeks early-career scientists and engineers to join our New York–based team as summer interns. Roles are available for applicants of varied backgrounds and experience levels, from rising sophomores in college to graduate students. Successful candidates will have impressive records of academic achievement in the natural sciences, machine learning, and/or scientific software development. Some computational research experience and/or programming in Python or C/C++ is preferred.
D. E. Shaw Research develops and uses advanced computational technologies to understand the behavior of biologically and pharmaceutically significant molecules at an atomic level of detail, and to design precisely targeted, highly selective drugs for the treatment of various diseases.
Interns spend 12-15 weeks working closely with members of our chemistry and drug discovery and/or computer science teams on a substantial research project. Past interns have contributed to projects that have spanned the scientific interests of our group, including studying the structure and function of particular proteins or conducting drug discovery research using our ANTON® supercomputers, developing simulation methods or the underlying physical models for our simulations, and applying machine learning techniques to our areas of research. Throughout the summer, interns are invited to participate in a seminar series led by members of our technical team and in lively social programming. We provide our interns with above-market compensation and a generous housing allowance.

The expected monthly salary for our internships is $10,000–$15,000. The applicable monthly salary paid to a successful applicant will be determined based on multiple factors including the nature and extent of prior experience and educational background.
