Seasonal Soil and Water Quality Technician
 
Duty Station: Statewide; Bismarck, North Dakota
Application Period: Open until filled
Position Duration: Mid-March 2023 - August 2023; Mid-May 2023 - August 2023
Pay: $16/hr. plus housing stipend 
 
The Great Plains Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) is seeking inquisitive, detail-oriented, and self-motivated applicants for two soil and water quality technician positions located in Bismarck, North Dakota to work under the direction of a DU agronomist, wetland scientist, and staff biologists. The incumbents will be involved in a variety of tasks related to DU’s soil health and conservation science teams focusing in the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota. Successful applicants will be expected to work full-time with one position running from late March to August and another starting in May and continuing into August. Field work can be physically demanding. Applicants must be able to work in all weather for long periods of time, often walking over rough and uneven terrain. Therefore, only enthusiastic and dedicated individuals should apply. A valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and drug screen are required. 
 
Primary responsibilities:
  • Assist in soil health monitoring on fields enrolled in DU’s soil health programs. Specific duties include: 
  • A variety of soil health tests, water infiltration tests, plant identification (cover crops, rangeland plants, noxious weeds).
  • Assist DU’s science staff in wetland monitoring. Specific duties include:
  • Collect wetland water samples, monitor wetland hydrology, conduct basic biological surveys (waterfowl, wildlife, insects, etc.).
  • Representing DU at field-day events and soil health outreach efforts to landowners and other stakeholders.
 
Required skills and education:
  • A minimum one year of advanced education in a requisite field (wildlife, agriculture, agronomy, range science, natural resources) or a closely related field. 
  • Familiarity with basic collection of scientific data.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Ability to work well as a part of a team and independently.
  • Excellent technology and computer skills and a basic understanding of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and ArcGIS.
