Transmission System Operator

Minimum pay for this position is $45.96 per hour or commensurate with experience.

Position Summary:
This position is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the transmission system.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the electric transmission system meets demand while maintaining system parameters such as frequency, line flows and transmission-level voltage within prescribed limits
  • Restore service (through SCADA and dispatch of field personnel) to transmission and substation facilities to reduce customer outage time and restore system integrity
  • Coordinate complex switching activities with other utilities to make certain safety and reliability are upheld
  • Ensure appropriate communications on all transmission events
  • Review all written logs pertaining to daily events to ensure proper logging and readability
  • Ensure proper documentation is completed to meet all regulatory requirements including but not limited to ERCOT and NERC
  • Monitor and report all communication problems on RTU's and the EMS to ensure vital communications are available for normal and emergency operations
  • Utilizes one-line diagrams as a tool in writing and checking switching orders
  • Maintains working knowledge of all System Operations procedures, manuals, handbooks, plans and technology systems
  • Maintains NERC Certification (at the Transmission Operator level) to assure understanding of NERC policies and to meet NERC requirements
  • Provide recommendations to System Operations management on operating procedures, EMS enhancements, and training topics to improve processes and procedures
  • Monitor weather conditions to ensure PEC system operations readiness during adverse weather conditions
  • Maintain working knowledge of Real-Time Contingency Analysis (RTCA) and State Estimator tools and applications
  • Determine necessity to shed firm load during ERCOT Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) event, or any events where shedding firm load is necessary to maintain the integrity of the transmission grid and/or for the safety of personnel and equipment
  • Analyze system voltage and performs daily/night and weekend load flow approvals for unplanned outages
  • Stay abreast of advances in technology
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of EMS/ Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) applications or prior work experience in a mission critical or controls environment
  • Knowledge of using computer systems, which may include setting up and using hardware and software programs, entering data, configuration, or processing information
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service
  • Knowledge of technical presentations and reporting
  • Knowledge of construction materials and products
  • Experience working on EMS based infrastructure and comfortable building and executing training scenarios
  • Skilled in time management
  • Skilled in prioritizing and managing changing priorities
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to listen and understand information verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, analyze and resolve conflict and problems

Minimum Qualifications – (Education, Experience, Certification, & Licensure):
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Four years of directly related work experience
  • NERC System Operator certification
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • ERCOT System Operator Certification preferred
