Intern DNALC, College


The DNA Learning Center (DNALC) of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is currently seeking multiple college-level interns to provide laboratory assistance for field trip, off-site, summer camp and faculty training programs. Successful candidates will become part of a collaborative team, which requires strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work closely with others as well as independently in the lab.

DNALC college interns are expected to help prepare and maintain various equipment and reagents necessary to providing a quality genetics education to students in middle school and above. This position requires the intern to provide laboratory assistance to the educational staff of the DNALC.

After some time, college interns may have the opportunity to initiate an independent research project with the support of DNALC staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Preparation of solutions and media.

· Maintenance of bacterial, C. elegans and Drosophila strains.

· Classroom upkeep, equipment setup and management of inventory.

· Packing equipment and reagents for offsite kits to be used by teachers in school.

· Testing of reagents and record keeping.

· Additional summer duties include assisting education staff during classroom instruction and supervising campers during lunch.

· Possible training of newly hired high school and college interns.

Education: Currently enrolled at a College or University as a STEM major
 
 
Experience: Less than 1 year
 
 
Other: Ability to work a minimum of 10 hours per week during the school year.
 Ability to work Monday – Friday (8-4PM) for a minimum of 6 weeks during the summer.
 Must be at least 18 years of age.
 Must have reliable transportation to and from the DNALC in Cold Spring Harbor.
 
 
KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS REQUIRED: Proficiency in bacteriology and sterile technique preferred but not required.
 Proficiency in preparing and aliquotting reagents preferred but not required.
 Good organizational skills.
 Experience with Microsoft Excel and other Windows programs preferred but not required.
