Magnet Design Scientist

Position Description:

The NSLS-II Accelerator Systems Division has an opening for a magnet design scientist/engineer to design, specify, build, and evaluate particle accelerator magnets. The magnet types will include conventional electromagnets as well as magnets based on permanent-magnet (PM) technology such as PM dipoles, PM quadrupoles and undulators. Applicants should be highly motivated to work in a cross-disciplinary environment on R&D and engineering activities related to magnet design and development. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage magnet development projects for the upgrade of the NSLS-II storage ring
  • Develop magnetic designs from initial concept to detailed 3D magnet models.
  • Conduct performance tests including detailed magnetic measurement, analysis of results, design adjustments, and final approval for installation 
  • Work independently and interact with senior engineering and scientific staff for assignments, guidance, and support
  • Present research in scientific journals and at conferences

Position Requirements

  • Degree in physics, engineering, or other relevant discipline
  • PhD plus 2+ years of experience, or
  • Master’s degree plus 6+ years of experience, or
  • Bachelor’s degree plus 8+ years of experience
  • Experience in the design of particle accelerator magnets
  • Experience in magnet design simulations using RADIA and/or OPERA software.
  • Experience with magnetic measurement techniques based on rotating coils, rotating wire and stretched wire
  • Clear and concise written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient with MS Office, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in hybrid-PM magnet designs
  • Experience in magnetic field correction using shims
  • Experience in precise motion control for magnetic measurements
  • Experience in large scale magnet fabrication and installation
  • Ability to work independently and to interact with and report to senior engineering and scientific staff for assignments, guidance, and support
  • Ability to interact and support contractors, vendors, and procurement professionals
  • Project development and management skills
