Lab Technician III, Animal

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking a Lab Technician III, Animal to join the Lab Animal Resources department. In this role, you will care for animals in the facility, communicate with co-workers and scientists regarding treatment and conditions. You will be responsible for technical procedures including genotyping and tattooing. The role will require maintaining breeding colonies, administration of medical treatments according to prescribed instructions, and sanitization of cages and equipment. The ability to communicate effectively with LAR staff and CSHL scientists both orally and through email is imperative to this position.

Responsibilities Include: 

·     Provide technical assistance and clinical support in the animal facility
·     Provide general laboratory animal nursing services to investigative staff.
·     Maintaining anesthesia machines and maintains supplies and keeps up to date animal health records; performing gross rodent necropsies.
·     Inventory items such as food, bedding, and cleaning supply. 
·     Keep records of medications, supplies, and special services rendered and initiates billing charges. 
·     Train, lead, or assists animal technicians, students, and scientific staff. 

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline and LAT certification or Associate’s degree and LATG certification

Experience: At least three years in laboratory animal husbandry

Knowledge/Skills: 

·     Experience in recognizing normal and abnormal body functions and vital signs in laboratory animals
·     Knowledge of USDA, New York State, AAALAC policies and procedures as they relate to the housing and management of laboratory animals.
·     Must be able to lift 50 pounds. The position requires standing most of the day.
·     Well organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable to changes
·     Knowledge of methods and medical techniques in handling small animals. 
·     Ability to effectively communicate is essential.

Other requirements: Must have a valid driver’s license; use of personal vehicle required. Ability to work occasional overtime, weekends, and holidays.
