Environmental Education and Interpretation Member
Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, Alaska State Office is seeking ONE ACE: Environmental Education and Interpretation Member. The ACE Member will assist the BLM and work out of the BLM Campbell Creek Science Center facility in Anchorage, AK.
The project will be coordinated by the CCSC Manager and Education Coordinator. Field work may be in remote Alaskan conditions, on improved or rough trails, and in harsh weather conditions. Work will also be conducted in an office environment. The project expected outcomes include an estimated of teaching and/or supporting more than 100 educational and interpretive programs, self-guided learning resources, and supporting implementation of CCSC's strategic plan.

The BLM Alaska State Office is located in Anchorage, Alaska. BLM Alaska manages over 70 million surface acres and 220 million subsurface acres (Federal mineral estate) in a state with a landmass equivalent to about one-fifth of the entire contiguous United States. BLM Alaska's recreation program is diverse, home to six Wild and Scenic Rivers, Iditarod National Historic Trail, White Mountains National Recreation Area and 12 public use cabins, hundreds of miles of trails, and numerous campgrounds and wayside locations.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $600/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. Additionally a Relocation Allowance of up to $1000 will be available for travel to site. As well as a gear and training Allowance of up to $460 will be available.
Scheduling: Monday - Friday, generally 8 AM to 5PM, possibility for Weekends, early mornings, and evenings may be required in this placement.
Housing: Members will be responsible for their own housing in Anchorage, Alaska. Government housing is not available. A housing allowance will be provided of up to $60/week.
Vehicle Needs: A personal vehicle is NOT required for the position but is recommended. The position will be a mix of onsite work at the CCSC, occasional field work, and virtual work.
Position Description: The Campbell Creek Science Center (CCSC) engages all learners in outdoor experiences that increase their appreciation, connection, and stewardship of natural and cultural resources and public lands. The CCSC is BLM Alaska's primary center for environmental education, interpretation, and youth engagement, interacting with an average of 50,000 annual visitors through programs, outreach, and interpretive resources onsite and across the state for the Bureau. The CCSC serves as a main implementor of the BLM Alaska's Education, Interpretation, and Youth Engagement (EIYE) step down strategy. This position involves teaching and leading child, youth, and adult groups outdoors in the Alaska environment. This may include teaching in areas of improved trails, rough terrain, wildlife, harsh weather conditions, and remote settings.
Project Objective: The ACE will assist with implementing the EIYE strategy for BLM Alaska by teaching in-person and virtual environmental education, interpretation, and outreach experiences for Alaskans. They will assist with developing lesson plans, designing learning resources, supporting volunteer projects, and engaging with community members to connect them with public lands resources. The position provides the Ace Member with significant experience in the fields of visitor services, interpretation, and environmental education, as well an opportunity to work with a variety of natural and cultural resource professionals.. The BLM will provide all necessary computers, training, office supplies, and any field supplies.
Duties: The ACE member will develop and facilitate in-person and virtual education and interpretation programs for K12 school audiences and members of the public. They will also design educational, self-guided activities such as Junior Ranger Missions and Campbell Creek Science Center - Nature Learning Activities | Bureau of Land Management educational activity handouts. As a member of the CCSC team, the member will help the team carry out strategic goals focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and accessibility and internal and external communication throughout their term.

Qualifications: This opportunity is suitable for youth working towards, or recently graduated from, an undergraduate or graduate degree in environmental education and interpretation; visitor services; resource recreation, and tourism; society and natural resources; and natural or cultural sciences disciplines; or related field.

BLM Required
- Successful completion of a federal background check

- Fundamental knowledge or training in all Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of and experience with leading child and youth environmental education programs.
- Knowledge of and experience with preparing and presenting interpretive programs for diverse audiences.
- Experience with using diverse technology for learning environments (including Zoom, Teams, A/V equipment)
- Many languages are spoken in Anchorage. Proficiency in languages beyond English is a plus (particularly Dena'ina, Yup'ik, Spanish, Hmong, Samoan, Filipino, Korean, Tagalog).
- Ability to think creatively and work collaboratively to create meaningful programs in a team environment.
- Ability to keep work tasks and projects organized and pay attention to details.
