Intern- Pharma Partnering, Genentech Business Development, Summer Associate

The Position


Start Date: specific month: May/June
Length of Assignment: 3 months
Location: This internship is currently planned to be on site in South San Francisco. It has the option for flexible work arrangements (to work remotely within the U.S. borders).
Education Level: Graduate degree in MBA, PhD, MD, or PharmD is preferred.

Pharma Partnering is a diverse group of professionals that apply scientific, financial and negotiating expertise to establish collaborations that facilitate development and commercialization of therapies to bring important new medicines to patients. Genentech's Business Development group continually strives to identify and evaluate novel opportunities that result in strategic alliances with partners. A Business Development Summer Associate may work with multiple external stakeholders and departments in the company, such as Research, Medical Affairs, Market Development, Finance, Marketing, Product Development, Regulatory, and Process Development, to source and evaluate new therapeutic opportunities and to assess the technical merit, potential market size, competitive outlook and strategic fit of licensing opportunities relative to Genentech’s existing portfolio.
Pharma Partnering supports Genentech’s strategic interests in our areas of focus (Oncology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Ophthalmology and Neurology) but also actively evaluates emerging/disruptive scientific areas, platforms and enabling technologies that help Genentech deliver on its mission to pursue groundbreaking science to discover and develop medicines for people with serious and life-threatening diseases. 
Sample recent project work has included conducting a landscape in areas of high partnering interest (e.g. regenerative medicine/neuroimmunology/other scientific areas), supporting ongoing deal discussions, and developing a strategy for VC engagement.

Who you are:
Qualifications for BD Summer Associate Internship positions include but are not limited to:
  • Preferred 3-4 years of experience in finance, consulting, drug development or equivalent
  • Graduate degree in MBA, PhD, MD, or PharmD is preferred 
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in effectively interacting with executives and senior leaders
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
