Process Development Engineer

Job Description
In a dynamic, exciting, and fast-paced startup environment, you will contribute to establishing process technology and building and operating the pilot-scale plant to demonstrate the scale-up of novel materials for the next generation of batteries. As an integral part of our technical team, you will contribute to the material design and production as well as have a broad opportunity to contribute technical solutions to a variety of emerging challenges.
You will be a key member of the Materials and Process R&D team focusing on building, starting up, and operating pilot equipment while advancing engineering fundamentals of new cathode material process technology. Pushing beyond your limits is critical as we are tasked with doing what has never been done before.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Support Group1 team with building and operating cathode materials pilot plant, design and implement new process steps as needed
  • Apply your knowledge of chemistry, heat transfer, and mass transfer
  • Prepare pilot scale materials for customer and battery testing
  • Conduct process development investigations utilizing process measurements and control
  • Work with vendors and contractors to identify and test process concepts and new unit operations
  • Establish and execute process control strategy and SOPs
  • Lead process safety in the team
  • Prepare technical presentations and participate in team meetings
  • Capture information in material and process digital systems as well as lab notebooks and other records per standards.

Qualifications
  • General knowledge and understanding of chemical engineering, materials synthesis and scale up
  • Experience with process safety, safe handling of chemicals, and waste management in the laboratory
  • Starting up and operating pilot reactor and separations systems
  • Troubleshooting problems with an observational and analytical approach
  • Proven ability to work in a team to achieve concrete objectives in a timely manner
  • Eagerness to explore in pursuit of new ways to improve and create value.
  • Technical problem-solving skill: ability to identify causes and potential solutions to technical problems.
  • Experimental design, modeling, data management, and analysis experience is a plus as well as experience with project management.
  • Aptitude to work effectively in a dynamic and fast-paced start-up environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • An entrepreneurial, self-starter mindset, evidenced by a past track record
  • Bachelor’s degree and generally 2+ years of related experience, OR Master’s degree in related technical discipline and generally 1+ years of related experience

Specific Skills/Abilities
The position requires attention to strong safety culture, planning, and execution of details while being a resourceful problem solver with strong communication skills. You must have demonstrated hands-on experience – a “builder’s” mentality. The role will involve independent work on building and operating a materials synthesis pilot plant.
