Entry-Level Chemist

Position Location: Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA

We are currently recruiting for an Entry-Level Chemist. This position reports to the Manager of Process Research and is located at our Lake Charles Chemical Complex within the Research and Development Department. 


Purpose of Job
Analyzes routine and non-routine plant samples, R&D samples, and samples from customers. Supports Applications and Process support groups directly. 


Key Accountabilities
  • Responsible for safely conducting a broad spectrum of laboratory experiments under the direction of senior researchers, for properly maintaining Sasol equipment, and for the generation and communication of reliable, properly-documented data for lead scientists
  • Provides technical support to lead scientists and research groups within R&D; leads focused technical initiatives within the research group
  • Understands technical requirements and recommends R&D objectives, defines what is needed in terms of equipment, etc., and sets appropriate project goals with supervisor and project teams to meet technical needs
  • Responsible for integrity and operation of company equipment, and adherence to safety, health, and environmental procedures
  • Responsible for understanding Sasol's procedures for securing intellectual property; responsible for appropriately recording laboratory results for use in developing intellectual property
  • Develops and maintains relationships to guarantee effective utilization of "Best Practices" for technologies within the scope of the job
  

Formal Education
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering 


Working Experience
  • 2+ years of industrial laboratory experience preferred


Required Personal and Professional Skills
  • Organic Synthesis research experience including the use of laboratory-scale autoclaves, glassware reactors, distillation, and mechanical skills to assemble reactors
  • Pilot plant or process/operations (e.g. DCS, handling materials, process safety) experience preferred
  • Ability to define, and implement ideas and solutions
  • Strong mathematical/laboratory skills
  • Computer competency including knowledge and ability to utilize Microsoft Office and other required software
  • Good oral and written communications skills
