Product Testing Lead Scientist (Natural Resource Scientist 3)

The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Product Testing Lead Scientist (Natural Resource Scientist 3) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

In this newly created position, you will serve as scientific lead for Product Testing. Here you will demonstrate your scientific expertise, collaborative decision-making skills, and leadership abilities working with a wide array of policy staff and Environmental Assessment Program scientific staff that includes chemists, quality assurance staff, and other scientific study leads and technical experts to complete program priorities. Additionally, you will be responsible for leading complex multidisciplinary studies to evaluate toxic chemicals in consumer products, installments of products, and of the environment near those product installments.

During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. Much of this position’s work can be done remotely, however assigned studies and mentoring may necessitate near-daily prep room work, fieldwork and other office-based study collaborations to occur several times a year, for several weeks at a time. At a minimum, this position will be required to work in the office one day per pay period. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing. Looking ahead, Ecology has recently updated the agency policies on telework and flexible and compressed work schedules.

Duties

What makes this role unique? 
In this role, you will serve to provide guidance, training, and mentoring to other unit study leads, provide technical assistance and scientific expertise to other departmental programs and external entities, and also lead, design and facilitate multidisciplinary product testing and environmental monitoring studies.

Washington State is a leading expert in consumer product testing and works and coordinates with a number of stakeholders and scientists nationwide to help identify toxic threats to consumers and the environment. This work directly informs compliance and regulatory actions developed and implemented through our Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction (HWTR) program. Our product testing team scientists are passionate about the work they do and enjoy the challenges that accompany this novel emerging science. Through coordination with internal and external policy partners, in this position, you will lead scientific studies to characterize the toxic concentrations of chemicals in consumer products and installments of products in the environment.

What you will do: 

  • Lead complex natural resource science research, compile available scientific literature and data to define study parameters, design, and conduct studies to assess and locate sources of toxics in products, processes, and equipment used at businesses.
  • Serve as the Product Testing scientific lead and technical expert to other departmental programs and external entities.
  • Serve as the Environmental Assistance Program (EAP) team mentor for the Product Testing Unit.
  • Work with the HWTR Product Replacement Program, other HWTR policy staff, EAP product testing staff, and EAP environmental scientific staff to coordinate and design multidisciplinary product testing and environmental monitoring studies.
  • Conduct statistical analyses and quality assurance reviews to develop reports and lead presentations to communicate study findings.  
  • Organize and participate in regular cross program meetings, which may include, program work planning, project scoping and other collaborative client meetings.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
Option 1: A Bachelor’s degree with a major study in chemistry, environmental science or other closely allied field. AND four (4) years of professional research work experience in conducting chemical analysis of products or similar media, and/or performing environmental monitoring and toxic chemical characterization.

Option 2: A Master’s degree with a major study in chemistry, environmental science, or other closely allied field. AND two (2) years of professional research work experience in conducting chemical analysis of products or similar media, and/or performing environmental monitoring and toxic chemical characterization.

Option 3: A Ph.D. with a major study in chemistry, environmental science, or other closely allied field.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience analyzing data and writing technical reports.
  • Experience performing environmental monitoring and collecting environmental samples.
