Applied Physicist-Focused Ion Beam (FIB) / Charged Particles

Hillsboro, OR / Analytical Instruments Group - Materials & Structural Analysis Division

Our Analytical Instruments Group offers customers in research, academic, industrial and applied markets a complete range of high-end analytical instruments as well as laboratory equipment, software and services. Within this group, our Materials & Structural Analysis Division designs, manufactures, and supports the broadest range of high-performance microscopy workflows that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales. Our research combines hardware and software expertise in electron, ion, FTIR, NIR, NMR UV/VIS and light microscopy with deep application knowledge in the materials science, life sciences, electronics, and natural resources markets.

How will you make an impact?
With your extensive experience in the design, operation, characterization, and hands on approach in solving complex laboratory equipment related to charged particles beam systems (including ion/electron columns and related systems), you will work on the design and development of Focused Ion Beam (FIB) columns.

What will you do?
• Design and perform simulations of FIB columns, including charged particle optics simulations, electrical requirements analysis, high voltage and electromagnetic fields design and analysis, mechanical design analysis, vacuum design, and material selection
• Develop testing and characterization methods to validate FIB performance
• Develop and maintain in-house software tools to simulate and characterize FIB columns
• Work closely with multi-functional engineering groups to develop FIB columns-related products
• Maintain extensive knowledge of innovative principles and theories of charged particle optics and systems, including ion and electron columns and sources
• Lead and manage small-sized ion column development projects
• Participate in the development of patent applications
• Provide company-wide technical support for ion columns

How will you get here?
Education
MSc or PhD degree in Physics or related technical discipline

Experience
• 2+ years validated experience in the design, simulation, and operation of charged particle beam systems, such as FIB and SEM columns, ion and electron sources including plasma sources, and related systems
• Combination of strong scientific programming and lab hands-on skills is highly desirable
• Experience using and solving laboratory equipment including electronics, high voltage and vacuum systems
• Experience with high-level programming languages (Python, C/C++) and numerical methods
• Prior electrical engineering background is a plus

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Knowledge of plasma source technology is highly desirable
• Excellent data processing and analytical skills
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment, as well as with multi-functional groups
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
