Noise Measurement Campaign Planner

HMMH is a trusted leader in the study, assessment, and mitigation of the impacts of new and existing transportation projects on communities. We have an immediate opening for a Noise Measurement Campaign Planner supporting our Federal Programs group in a remote position, or hybrid in one of our six (6) office locations. 

Position Responsibilities:
  • Oversee acoustical data collection, including field measurement trips
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute complex sound measurement campaigns in remote locations
  • Conduct noise measurements requiring use of a highly technical custom designed impulsive noise detection and measurement systems simultaneously deployed at numerous locations over large test regions.
  • Deploy, employ, and re-deploy sound measuring equipment. Requires ability to use sophisticated electronic instrumentation and utilize Engineering skills to troubleshoot possible equipment errors.
  • Conduct data analysis and interpretation of collected data using quantitative skills
  • Develop specialized computational tools (e.g., programs, scripts, spreadsheets, etc.) for quantifying noise levels and assessing noise impacts
  • Apply complex mathematical equations and engineering calculations to determine noise impacts
  • Conduct Model validations, comparing measured and modeled noise data to determine possible shortcomings in the theoretical noise model
  • Find creative, technically sound, and appropriate solutions to technical problems
  • Oversee property accountability for government furnished equipment in HMMH care and custody during life of contract
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations
  • Manage project teams, including project subcontractors
  • Manage several large-scale technical projects simultaneously efficiently and effectively utilizing HMMH staff and resources to complete technical project work on-time and on-budget.
  • Mentor junior staff members by imparting technical knowledge and project management skills by working closely together on technical projects.
  • Find creative, technically sound, and appropriate solutions to technical problems
  • Actively communicate with project team members and clients to contribute toward delivering high-quality technical documentation
  • Outdoor field work, initially up to six (6) weeks, three (3) times per year throughout the United States with extensive planning and coordination required in the preceding months.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:
  • BA, BS, or MS in a technical field (aerospace/aviation, physics, math, engineering, environmental sciences, acoustics, or other technical fields)
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in acoustics
  • Must be able and willing to travel nationally 50%-75% of the time.
  • Demonstrated experience with MATLAB.
  • Strong writing skills and ability to communicate technical information clearly to both highly technical and non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and collaborative communication skills
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Data management and programming experience (specifically SQL, Python)
  • Demonstrated experience supporting team presentations and public meeting participation
  • Experience using GIS for data acquisition, analysis, and reporting functions
  • Experience with measurement and quantification of atmospheric conditions during acoustical testing
  • Desire to use physics, math, and/or engineering skills within an established and respected consulting firm with an emphasis on technical excellence, honesty, ethics, respect, teamwork, and professional development.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Interest in air quality, aviation, and environmental issues
  • Impulse noise / sonic boom measurement experience
