IT Security Administrator (IT Security - Journey)

Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

The Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill an IT Security Administrator (IT Security – Journey) position. This position will be located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

In this role, you will be responsible for all of Ecology's IT security services that defend and mitigate the health status of the agency's computer environments. Our security services protect all agency-managed desktops, mobile devices, servers and computer networks. Our team provides the primary services that identify and mitigate vulnerabilities, cyber intrusions, malware and compliance mandates. You will use your broad understanding of security technology, solid understanding of the principles of IT security and mix of experience in skills in security administration.
 
We are looking for applicants who are well grounded in the principles of IT Security, have a wide base of knowledge across all security services. The successful candidate must be able to communicate clearly with technical and business area customers as well as independently manage their work priorities.
 
The IT Security Services Section is growing the size and scope of its services. In this role, you will have a unique opportunity for exposure and input on existing and new IT security services at the Department of Ecology. You will be able to use and expand your security skills in areas including: risk mitigation, vulnerability management, incident response, firewall management, audit compliance, endpoint security, managed security services and security consultation.
 
During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. This position will be expected to work up to three days per week in the office. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing. Looking ahead, Ecology has recently updated the agency policies on telework and flexible and compressed work schedules. Duties





What makes this role unique?
Providing quality IT security services is unique and difficult work. Today’s cybersecurity warriors must deal with the growing complexity of enterprise computing environments, the continual integration of new technologies, an increasingly mobile workforce and an ever-changing threatscape of bad actors and new compromise techniques.
 
Your responsibilities will include
 
  • M365 and Azure security tools to assess and mitigate risk.
  • IT security events analysis and response.
  • IT vulnerability management service.
  • Consulting to Ecology IT teams during Ecology’s IT Security Review process.
  • System Administration of Security tools managed by IT Security Services.
  • Custom scripts to manage security tools and configurations.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
Five (5) years of experience in one or more of the following IT disciplines: IT security, firewall administration, vulnerability management, penetration testing, server administration, network administration, or systems analysis.
 
OR
 
An associate degree or higher in Computer Science, information technology (IT) Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), or closely related field AND three (3) years of professional experience in one or more of the IT disciplines listed above.

OR

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology (IT), Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), or closely related field AND (1) year (full time equivalent) of professional experience in one or more of the IT disciplines listed above.

Please Note: Professional IT certifications can be substituted for years of experience at a rate of one year for every two certifications.
 
Certifications:
 
  • CompTIA (Network+, Security+)
  • CEH
  • CISSP
  • SANS (GSEC, GCFW) 
  • CISCO (CCNA or CCNP)
*Additional combinations of education or accredited vocational training, as listed above, can substitute for all but one (1) year of experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Bachelor degree with a focus in Cybersecurity, Cybercrime & fraud investigation, computer forensics or computer science
