We are currently seeking a Battery Engineer/Scientist for our Materials & Corrosion Engineering Practice in Phoenix, AZ. In this role you will work as part of a team to solve challenging, real world problems related to batteries, energy storage, and materials science for our clients. You will work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers and will play a key role in designing and running battery cycling and abuse experiments, as well as interpreting and presenting data both within Exponent and to external clients. This position may require some travel (limited during COVID-19) and will involve collaboration with scientists and engineers from other Exponent offices and practices covering a wide range of industries. One of your long-term goals will be to develop business by obtaining new projects and bringing new clients to the firm, while continuing to grow professionally as an expert in your field.

You will be responsible for:
  • Communicating and working effectively with other Exponent staff at all levels of the company
  • Designing, planning and executing laboratory tests to support battery failure analysis, abuse testing, and quality assessment projects
  • Operating and maintaining battery test equipment
  • Analyzing data and reporting results at an appropriate technical level for the intended audience
  • Conducting hands-on failure analysis of batteries and battery-containing devices
  • Performing materials characterization, using techniques such as photography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray computed tomography scanning, and electrochemical analysis techniques

You will have the following skills and qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Hands-on experience working on batteries and/or electrochemical energy storage devices in a laboratory setting
  • Hands-on experience designing, constructing, and maintaining custom test apparatuses in a laboratory setting
  • Experience in data analysis programmatically (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or R); knowledge of Python, Pandas and Matplotlib preferred
  • Experience performing materials characterization using techniques such as photography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray computed tomography scanning, and electrochemical analysis
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be able to convey complex technical information to individuals in engineering, business, legal, and related industries
  • Ability to work within project teams with strong desire to contribute and collaborate
  • Strong organization and project management skills
  • Potential for technical and project managerial leadership
