2023 Buck Institute Gap-Year Research Program

The Buck Postbaccalaureate Research Program offers recent college and university graduates the opportunity to take a 2-year break after graduation before continuing their research career. Postbaccalaureate Researchers will have the opportunity to investigate insights into the critical molecular and biological drivers of aging as well as translation of that research into new therapies which will improve healthspan. They will conduct biomedical research to combat diseases of aging, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, macular degeneration, heart disease, and diabetes. The position will entail research assistant duties as well as training opportunities, which will include a mentored research project. The Program emphasizes both laboratory and communication skills training to develop well-rounded future scientists, healthcare professionals, and policy makers.
 
Participants of the program will have the opportunity to improve their laboratory, critical thinking, and scientific communication skills within the context of a research project. Other program highlights include full benefits, international student eligibility (via OPT), career development/networking opportunities, and a flexible schedule for interviews.
 
Program Learning Objectives:
1. Plan and execute an independent research project.
2. Learn new technical skills.
3. Learn how to explain scientific concepts to a lay audience.
4. Learn how to write a simple grant proposal.
5. Give a formal research presentation to scientists.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree required. All majors accepted.
  • Must have prior research/lab experience. You will be asked to submit a Scientific Statement highlighting your prior research experience.
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA. You will be asked to submit an unofficial transcript.
  • 1-2 letters of recommendation

Compensation:
$50,000 annual salary + institute benefits including medical/dental/vision; generous PTO and 401k retirement plan with 5% employer match after 1 year of employment
