CDC Health Communication Fellowship
CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), Office of Communication (OC) at CDC in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The fellow will develop communication materials in a variety of formats including plain language content for websites, communication reports to other teams and leadership within the office, and support health communication projects like digital first and message testing.
Learning Objectives: Specific learning opportunities include, but are not limited to
- Design and produce a variety of materials in support of NCIPC/OC communication activities
- Train with OC and Division communicators to develop plain language content for the NCIPC website
- Support NCIPC/OC communication projects for digital first, message testing, style guides, and project specific communication materials
- Write materials for publication and presentation, to include, but not limited to web content, internal communication, and PowerPoint presentations
- Coordinate and train collaboratively with other NCIPC and CDC health communicators, health educators, and other subject matter experts to ensure that communication messages and education materials are appropriate for NCIPC audiences
- Support communication efforts for NCIPC priorities including ACEs, overdose, suicide, community violence, and health equity
- Use knowledge of health communication methodologies, when assisting with the development of health communication strategies, content development, and media analysis.
The Office of Communication (OC) provides communication leadership and support to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), Office of the Director (OD) and divisions to advance the mission to prevent violence and unintentional injury and to reduce their consequences. They lead strategic:
- Planning efforts for communications and branding programs and projects,
- Communication direction and technical assistance, and
- Media planning and evaluation.
The OC also provides leadership in:
- Digital communication and marketing strategies,
- Web development and technical assistance for the Injury Center’s intranet and SharePoint sites,
- Social media campaigns, and in
- Coordinating health communication activities across divisions and CIOs.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 15, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's or master's degree in public health, health communication, or health education. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
- Strong communication and writing skills,
- Ability to train within a team
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to assist on a variety of topics and projects at the same time (which may include task tracking/management).
- Please provide 2 recent writing samples that demonstrate writing for different audiences with your application.
- Candidate must have coursework in health communications to qualify.
