Project Scientist - Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory, Dr. Shadel

A Project Scientist position is immediately available at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, California. The Project Scientist will be working with Professor Shadel, who studies the basic biology of mitochondria and mtDNA, and, in doing so, has identified novel ways that mitochondria contribute to disease, aging and the immune system. The Project Scientist will be responsible for the oversight and management of a project that contributes to a multidisciplinary, research program involving four collaborating laboratories.
Under the general guidance of PI, the Project Scientist is expected to work independently to develop a project centered on understanding the role of mitochondrial stress and inflammation in the age-dependence of liver cancer. This position is also responsible for overseeing the scientific progress of the assigned project, including setting priorities, planning procedures, coordinating activities and training of team members, conducting experiments, recording, integrating and reporting results of project phases, and determining logical flow of activities between the collaborating laboratories.
R & D (70%)
  • Plans and executes project work under general guidance of supervisor
  • Performs hands-on work in laboratory
  • Effectively interprets scientific data, sets priorities and makes decisions based on scientific data
  • Collaboration and coordination of project activities with other researchers in a team setting
Project, resource, team, collaboration and time management (20%)
  • Work with other team members and collaborators to meet deadlines and adhere to timelines
Writing, administration, communication (10%)
  • Documents work progress in periodic progress reports and notebooks
  • Effectively communicates in the form of written reports and oral presentations
  • Prepares manuscripts for publication
  • Minimum of 3 years Post PhD or MD experience
  • PhD or MD degree or equivalent in biological sciences or related field
  • Cell culture, including transfections for RNAi and gene overexpression studies
  • Advanced molecular cloning techniques
  • Western blotting
  • Purification and analysis of nucleic acids, including that needed for RNAseq, ChIPSeq and related -OMICS approaches
  • Bioinformatics experience for above -OMICS approaches
  • Provide guidance to technicians and post-docs on diverse techniques
  • Experience working with transgenic and knockout mouse models
  • Experience with multi-parameter flow cytometry and histology
  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Institute’s background investigation.
  • Willing to sign a confidentiality agreement
