Intern, Project Engineer
POSITION PURPOSE:
This purpose of this position is to learn the fundamentals of project management and provide engineering support for small capital projects at REG manufacturing facilities. Under the supervision of an experienced project engineer, specific responsibilities include the development of project justification, scope, schedule, budget, detailed design, equipment and piping specification, equipment procurement, developing contracts, and managing contractors performing the work.
This position may also include exposure to Process Engineering work as required.
** This position requires Project based travel ranging 10%-25% dependent on Project, and could be day or overnight trips**
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Key Accountabilities:
Project Management:
- Work closely with an experienced project engineer to develop an understanding of project engineering fundamentals, including engineering design and project management
- Understand and emphasize the importance of personnel safety in all projects and operations
- Design and implement small scale projects related to process improvements, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) recommendations, or facility modifications
- Lead project teams ranging from 3-15 people
- Work with plant and project team to develop project justification, scope, and schedule
- Obtain equipment specifications and price quotations
- Track project budget and forecast project spending.
- Develop capital requests
- Develop project detailed design documents
- Lead/coordinate project design and safety review meetings
- Evaluate contractor drawings such as P&IDs, mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, architectural, and general layout
- Ensure work is done safely and meets all QA/QC requirements
- Travel to facility as needed to ensure project success
Process Engineering:
- Develop a basic understanding of REG’s biodiesel and renewable diesel technologies
- Complete Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (PID’s) for projects as needed
- Participate in Process Hazard Analysis related to process changes
Project Documentation
- Ensure job files are stored per company policy
- Participate in punch list development and completion of outstanding items
- Ensure management of change procedures are followed and documented
- Maintain project documents and electronic document control for easy electronic archival and retrieval
- Obtain all required closeout information in a timely fashion to allow for expeditious completion of the closeout process
- Review installation of process piping and equipment to ensure all items are installed per the technical drawings
- Monitor contractor progress throughout the construction process including a final review of contractor work before the contractor leaves the site
Communication
- Organize and lead regular team and project meetings
- Assign action items during meetings and hold parties accountable through persistent communication
- Communicate project progress to stakeholders and be able to present to larger groups
- Write capital requests and provide justification for capital projects
- Issue monthly project reports
- Help bridge between the plants, corporate offices, and contractors during capital projects

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Required: Pursuing a bachelor’s degree – Chemical/Mechanical Engineering or related degree
**Senior or Junior status required
Experience Required: Relevant courses, club participation, and/or internship preferred
Skills Required:
Familiarity with P&IDs and process flow diagrams
Familiarity with heat and mass balances, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Strong leadership, organization, and troubleshooting skills
Basic financial analysis abilities
Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word)
Special skills or knowledge preferred:
Microsoft Project
Process data historians
Process simulations
Process control
Biodiesel production or related processes
