Experience Intern, Creative Marketing

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms.  

The Ginkgo Studio is a multidisciplinary team designing and communicating the future of synthetic biology. We work at the intersection of design, technology, biology, art, and communications. Although we’re immersed in this incredible technology, we also recognize that synthetic biology is not always an easy thing to communicate — or understand. We’re passionate about finding new ways to tell the story of synthetic biology, through creative marketing, PR, digital interfaces like syntheticbiology.com, social media like our Twitter account, creative projects in museums, booths at conferences, workshops and community building events, our annual event Ferment, and our magazine Grow by Ginkgo. We’re not only vision-setters who spend our time dreaming of possibilities but also go-getters who make those ideas a reality.

The Studio works across Ginkgo’s divisions by creating reusable and extensible materials to support the creative and communication needs of internal teams. The Studio works closely with Ginkgo’s commercial teams including the Business Development and Growth teams as well as Ginkgo’s leadership to develop the best strategies for customer acquisition, public engagement, and growing the bioeconomy.

As an Experience Intern, you’ll work directly with Studio team members spanning our creative, marketing, and communications functions as well as team members focused on impact and initiatives. You’ll also work with designers, artists, photographers, videographers, biologists, scientists, and businesspeople. Your internship’s projects will focus on Ginkgo’s experiential marketing efforts. Your project will support the Experiential Marketing sub-team.

With your creative expertise and enthusiasm about all things science and technology, you’ll join our growing team of multidisciplinary individuals who thrive at the intersection of design, biology, and communication. Your project will directly contribute to shaping Ginkgo’s digital and in-person experiential marketing efforts.

The Ginkgo Bioworks Early Talent program is open to students who will return to their degree programs upon completion of their employment at Ginkgo. Candidates must be enrolled in a United States based institution and/or have work authorization in the United States to be eligible to participate.

Responsibilities
  • Design and execute 1-3 experiential moments across Ginkgo’s digital footprint and/or Ginkgo’s physical sites, including redesigning Ginkgo’s “cabinet of curiosities” display in our main lobby
  • Support best practices for organizing and archiving content

Minimum Requirements
  • You are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, and are a current freshman, sophomore, or junior at the time of application
  • You have a passion for storytelling and creating experiences that strike people’s hearts and minds
  • You have a passion for community building
  • You have experience with conceiving, designing, and executing experiential moments
  • You are a people person! You're curious and naturally work well with people from all different backgrounds
  • You are opportunity oriented, self-motivated, proactive and don't wait to be told what to do, and are always looking for opportunities to learn, grow, and evolve
  • You are comfortable sharing work early and often, love receiving feedback, and love the iterative design process
  • You are genuinely excited and motivated by Ginkgo’s mission
  • You are familiar with Google Workspace (e.g. Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides)

Preferred Capabilities and Experience
  • Preferred academic major in Art, Graphic or Visual Design, Education, Marketing, or Hospitality
  • You are familiar with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop and digital prototyping tools (e.g. Figma; Sketch)
  • You have basic experience or a strong enthusiasm for biology, synthetic biology, biodesign, or other related fields or areas of study
