Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems Spring Student Engineer

This position will support EPRI researchers in developing testing platforms for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and DER management systems (DERMS). This work will involve working with a team of technical staff both inside and outside EPRI where it will cover a range of topics including power systems and control systems to support broad DER integration. This is a great opportunity to learn about modern power grids, distributed energy resources (renewables, energy storage), and smart grid technologies.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with EPRI researchers to scope, design, build, and test tools and software applications. Primary job functions will include:
  • Knowledge of electrical power systems
  • Knowledge of developing control systems for DER optimization (model-based)
  • Develop codes in python to develop model predictive control algorithms for DER management
  • Participate in interactions with subject matter experts at electric utilities and technology vendors.

Background, Education, Experience & Skills:

  • Senior or Graduate Student in Electrical Engineering preferred
  • Experience in control systems for DER 
  • Experience and knowledge in working with optimization methods
  • Experience in Python

Ideal Candidate:

  • Knowledge/experience creating programs Python or other coding software
  • Knowledge/experience working with electric power systems networks is a plus
  • Knowledge of distribution system emulation software
  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn new skills and ability to grasp new concepts quickly
