Senior Intellectual Property Counsel (1485)

New England Biolabs Inc. (NEB), a recognized leader in enzyme design and development, is seeking a Senior IP Counsel who will join the Intellectual Property Group as a contributor to all Intellectual Property functions within the company.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance/leadership to outside counsel and internal team to perform competitive patent intelligence
  • Draft and prosecute Global Patent Applications
  • Supervise outside counsel for European Oppositions and US Reexamination Challenges to Patents
  • Respond to patent office challenges instituted by third parties, including U.S. inter-parties’ reviews and European oppositions and inter-parties review
  • Defend NEB trademarks and copyrights in legal proceedings
  • Prepare Freedom to Operate Opinions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Advocacy Groups) at New England Biolabs to provide exceptional and timely IP protection, and strategic advice. 

Required Qualifications:
  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Ph.D. in molecular biology or similar field, preferably with postdoctoral experience
  • Admission to a state bar (Massachusetts strongly preferred)
  • Admission to the USPTO
  • At least 15 years of IP including both law firm and in-house counsel experience, including experience with life sciences tools and reagents companies
  • Familiarity with domestic and foreign filing requirements
  • Experience managing a complex patent portfolio and a high volume intellectual property workflow
  • Proven track record developing and implementing patent strategies with demonstrated success securing meaningful patent protection for products and technology platforms
  • Extensive expertise with USPTO, including drafting and prosecuting multiple patents in the field of biology
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to interact confidently with the CEO and senior leadership of the company
  • Creative problem solving, including the ability to collaborate iteratively with our researchers to strengthen our IP claims
  • Good understanding of legal and technical issues and capable of formulating winning arguments
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team setting
