JTFI Postdoctoral Fellowship

We Are:
Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.  We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are 1,800 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.

Open Date: June 15, 2022

The Joint Task Force Initiative Postdoctoral Fellowship (

The JTFI (Joint Task Force Initiative) Postdoctoral Fellowship program developed by Fermilab and the University of Chicago supports new and innovative research in particle physics by increasing the diversity of early-career researchers who demonstrate academic leadership and resilience in the face of adversity.

The JTFI Postdoctoral Fellowship seeks outstanding candidates who are underrepresented in STEM, such as Women, Black, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, and Latinx researchers in scientific, engineering and computing disciplines.
The Fellowship is an opportunity for emerging researchers to be immersed in a leading-edge research and development environment through collaboration with experienced, deeply knowledgable and often world-renowned scientists and engineers. The Fellow can choose to join one of the many existing research groups at Fermilab or initiate a new research track aligned with Fermilab’s mission.

Each year, a JTFI Postdoctoral Fellow will be selected by a Fermilab search committee. The selected Fellow will receive full support from the University of Chicago to carry out their research at Fermilab. The Fellowship package includes:

  • Up to five years of full financial support, including a competitive salary with full employment benefits.
  • A $2,500 travel stipend from the University of Chicago to carry out their research at Fermilab.

The Fellow will also be supported through Fermilab’s mentor programs and by laboratory resource groups tasked with sharing knowledge, strengthening professional networks, and assuring equity and inclusion for each member of the lab community.

We Are Looking For:
  • The candidate should have a Doctorate in Physics or a related field or a Master’s degree in Engineering or Computing Science either conferred within 12 months at the time of application or they should expect to receive their degrees shortly.
  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership, technical skills in hardware, software or data analysis, and the ability to produce publication-quality results. Any of these qualifications may have been demonstrated either inside or outside the academic/research setting.

Application Instructions:
To be considered for the Fellowship, candidates must follow the application procedure.
The candidate’s application package will include:
  • A cover letter outlining the candidates desire to apply for the Fellowship and a brief description of their qualifications.
  • A research statement focusing on their proposed research at Fermilab.
  • A CV describing the candidate’s research history and detailing their leadership and technical skills and the results of their research.  The CV should also include a list of relevant publications if available.
  • Between 3 and 5 letters of recommendation from people who can speak best to the candidate’s qualifications.

For further information please feel free to contact the hiring committee chairperson, Brendan Casey, and/or Fermilab’s Chief Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Officer Sandra Charles,

The Joint Task Force Initiative (JTFI) is a signature University of Chicago program dedicated to helping Argonne and Fermilab achieve mission success by opening channels of frequent communication and collaboration across institutions. The JTFI has created several joint task forces and strategic initiatives that provide critical support to the national laboratories. Since its founding in 2018, the JTFI has continued to inject ideas and significant resources in University support, with the aim of nurturing a vibrant and dynamic ecosystem that benefits both laboratories.
FRA encourages all employees to be fully vaccinated and boosted to prevent transmission of COVID-19 and to mitigate against severe illness from infection.
