R&D Engineer 1 (Inspection Engineer)

What You Will Do

Production Agency Quality ensures that all products in the Weapons Production Directorate meet or exceed all quality requirements. You will contribute to engineering R&D activities and operations in support of quality engineering in the Plutonium Production Quality Engineering and Inspection, TA-55 (PAQ-1) Group. This will include assisting in the completion of milestones on multiple projects and programmatic objectives related to inspection development and design as well as quality evidence capture. You will be expected to assist in developing robust inspection processes; to assist in developing Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) fixtures and programs to meet quality control standards and make suggestions with regard to procedures, standards and equipment to facilitate work and maintain product quality. You may also be expected to apply knowledge of 3-D design and modeling capabilities.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Inspection Development: Experience developing inspection processes including interpreting engineering blueprints, sketches, specifications and related data, specifying inspection equipment, characterizing process variables, and maintaining process performance.

Metrology Knowledge: Knowledge of metrology and statistical methods to help diagnose and correct improper quality control practices.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelors of Science Degree in Engineering or related science, 2 years job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Education Requirements: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution related to the occupation. Up to 2 years of related experience may be desired.

Desired Qualifications:
Manufacturing Experience: Knowledge in designing, planning, and executing projects associated with manufacturing.

Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing projects associated with inspection (e.g. coordinate measuring machines, laser interferometers, optical measurement techniques, and open setup techniques).

Software: Working knowledge of various software packages such as Quindos, Calypso, or PC-DMIS; PTC CREO; or Solid works.

Equipment: Experience using Coordinate Measuring Machines. Hands-on experience repairing or assembling machine tools to accuracies of less than one micron.

Position Information
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, ยง712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
